Hi all, Am in the process of buying a 1964 morris 850. My main query is that when I looked at it the odometer had the reading of only 200 .miles. The owner says that it is likely the teeth behind the odometer that have stopped and this can be repaired and it has been like this for a while.. My qeury is that are they going to question this when I go to change over the rego at the RTA and will this be a problem? Please reply soon as I will need to have some info on this matter ASAP. thanks all. |

It might need a new speedo , it might need a new cable or it might be the drive on the end of the gearbox (hang on , does the speedo itself work or is it and the odometer broken) . Doesn't make much difference to the RTA though , so long as it has an odometer with something they can read then they are happy . You'll need a working speedo for the rego inspection next time . Anyway , since mini oddometers only go to 100,000 it's likely it just clocked over a while before it stopped working (or a previous owner tried to wind it back and broke it .......) . |

The RTA does not care about odometer readings. I used to take my truck over the pits every year and they would write down the odo reading and it was the same every year. 
An F100 I owned also had a stuffed odo and I took it through five pink slips and a blue slip with the same numbers. However it is illegal to alter an odometer reading.

thanks for the info guys. I now have a number for someone who can fix this problem. It would be a shame not to buy this car for this issue as it is verytidy, original and great to drive. Any ideas for who to go to for insurnace? Curently with Justcars(but that was for my ex-rover cooper). |

I was under the impression that if you replace your speedo you have to take note of the odometer reading and also the new one so if there's an issue they can trace the reading by your own record

Cant find anything on the net about needing this fixed before rego transfer(but definately full rego renewal! ) This is he thing with cars of this vintage,there is always something but that is half the fun. Also all who have a 998 with twin su's how do you find your performance and fuel consumption, the one I drive today went quite well any comments on yours? |

vic roads states that you dont need a funtioning odometer or speedo if your car was made before 1978, i've had 3 mini's and the odometer never worked in any of them. dont worry about it |

This is what QLD transport says, and it is more of a guideline not an enforceable rule yet, BUT they may still decide to be difficult, depends on what kind of day the guy behind the counter has had!
