hey again,
My mini and my girl friendscars both make the same noise. I have heard heaps of cars do it and was wondering what it actually was. No it is not toot toot or vrrrrooom.

It is when a cars motor is under strain, like when you take of from the lights in 3rd with low revs
It kinda goes chug chug chug chug chug. Does that make sense. It almost sounds like a realy bad rattle but inside the motor. i know it is not a good sound but wondered what it was and what was happening to make said noise.

Sounds like Pinging.

A rattle rattle rattle from within the engine itself?

Sort of a metalic "pinging" noise , like dropping coins onto a muffled surface ? If so it's from lower octane fuel and or timing out a bit .

like the death rattle you hear from a lot of old daewoos and things - bad bad pinging caused by unsympatietic drivers!

Just to toss in gloom and doom - worn bearings also rattle under extreme loads as you describe. They sound sound like empty coconuts being tapped with hammers - direct quote from one of my mechanic text books.

The underlying message here is
"DONT labour the motor like that - use the gearbox and select a gear appropriate to the speed and conditions.

Take note of the octane rating of the petrol you use. If you dont have an unleaded conversion on the head then use premium fuel as well as the flashlube stuff.

If the noise persists - then get someone who is either a mechanic or mechanically wise to check the noise as well as the timing. You will otherwise ultimately bring both minis to the point where they fail to proceed.

does it sound like when you shake a spray can?
maybe your timing is too advance? bad batch of fuel?

hey.
Just to clear something up. i dont usually take off at the lights at in third. It just happened once and was using it as an example. :)

My girlfriends car is a ford laser not a mini. I thought it might help you to know that as both cars make the same noise when under the same pressures

I have heard it quite a few times when crossing the street from new cars and so forth.

I am going to get the mini tuned and serviced so hopefully this will clear it up. It only happens when struggling under load, so i try not to put it in that position and have not heard it in ages.

Cheers

Have you both got fuel recently from the same place ? Someone might have a dodgy batch of fuel and the octane's not what it should be . Did they both start doing it at the same time ?

It is preignition.
The sound of the fuel being burnt before your spark plug fires.
What is happening to your pistons is that they are slowly melting.
Same with your rings.
