Hey People..

just wondering if you could help me with a problem thats just come to my attention.

My car, or the engine i should say, is making a quiet abnormal sound..

Kinda sounds like keys rattling..well kinda. A rather metalic tinging sound..

It first starts at arround 1200rpm...things arent too loud at this point, im able to hear it easily.

Then at 3000rpm or arround there, when the throttle is 90% open, it starts again. Tho this could be something else..(could be the SU butterfly flapping violently????)..it dissapears when i put my foot down further.

I use Premium petrol...im hoping this isnt Ping....

Does anyone have a sound file of an engine pinging??

any help wanted...cheers

K

find a hill and drive casualy to it...put it in third and put your right foot down while climbing the hill..if it does it then..its pinging well its a good guess...if so turn back the Dizzy a little and retrye on the same hill

Don't sound like pinging to me....I would be looking for fan blades touching fan housing etc.....could also be that you need a manifold gasket  :D

If it's a rod change check your engine steadies. Mine use to make an odd high pitched sound that I thought was pinging or clutch shudder. Turned out to be the steady bracket rubber that was worn and the bolt sliding around the worn bush and therefor making a squeeking noise. replaced rubbers and tighten the bolt, bob's your uncle

okie, well,

its not bushes or a steady, they were all done wen the engine was rebuilt..a few months ago.

not the fan blade..

surely cant be ping...im using premium, and even added octane boost...didnt fix it. The dizzy has been turned way down...so i dunno.

its a really quiet sound...

hmmmmm :(

Bad pinging is usually a very violent sound
(But all pinging is bad)

Get it to a mechanic if you are unsure.
Stop farting around and have a second opinion.......

The sound you are hearing is the onset of your pistons and rings being belted to crap

you may have picked up a tankful of crap fuel - happens every now and then...

but as gaf says, pinging will only happen under power, and below the start of your engines power curve. Change from 2nd to 3rd at 2000rpm and bury your foot and it'll ping if the timing is too advanced. I'd just mark the dizzy where it is now and turn it back 1/4" and see what it's like. If it goes away, leave it as is until your next fill, make sure you get BP ultimate as it's the most consistent, and put the dizzy back to the mark again

Droll..very droll :P

Your manifold gasket might be stuffed and when they go they can make a ticking sound....that might explain the noise at idle....they usualy get quiter as the engine heats up (better seal). Get an oil can and carefully apply a tiny amount above each exhaust and inlet port....bubbles mean troubles :D

Took the mini to minicraft today

Mechanic took it for a spin and says the engine isnt pinging.

He wasnt able to hear the sound i was pointing out, so ive just got to keep an ear to it..Hope it doesnt get worse or cause damage.

other than that he said he's happy with how its running.

later.

yep I agree will 9ya and would also give that ago also...and of course the same Mech who built it would say it pulls hard as it may do.

I don't see that quote anywhere in this thread 9YA but I'm thinking another way now...I'm thinking Tapets...maybe one is a little open or loose.
Get yourself a screw driver and place it on the rocker cover while the engine is at idle...move along where each tapet is is and see if thier is a differance...if you are a little sus..get some one to check the gaps in the tapets or you could check them yourself
