Just bought my mini, dead head (gasket needs replacing) so got mechanic to rip head off, and piston has a hole in it. New pistons and rings are $270 and labour is $600 + clutch $130 and labour $400 Or

Plan b is $3850 for a recoed 1100 with recoed box, clutch and head.

Is there better pricing for a recoed motor in the Sydney region, or is this a good buy.

That sounds reasonable for a newly rebuilt engine, depending on the builder. If the head is ok (ie. only head gasket dead) then maybe the pistons and rings idea is the better alternative. That sounds like alot for pistons, but the work is about the right price.

Graham Russel is selling his 95hp 90ft/lb torque small bore engine from The Mini Experience article. Call him and ask him how much it's worth as it would be my choice of purchase :)

Seems a bit dear to me...reco 1100 bottom end = approx $1100. reco head $500, clutch kit $150 gearbox??? I suppose it depends how much assembly you care to do yourself. That said, its amazing how quickly the odds and sods (gaskets., seals etc add up).

Cheers, Ian

Hmmm..
The motor/powerplant does sound a bit pricey to without knowing details of what was done. There are reco's and reco's and I concede you could easily pay that much I you did it all with external labour.

Back onto your block - you can almost guarrantee that your bores have worn oval or that there is definitive ridges on the top of the bores. All that means rebores and once the motor is apart to do that, you are going to find all sorts of things that NEED to be done.

If you dont want to spend that sort of money, ask around, maybe someone has a motor/powerplant that they can sell you fairly cheaply. Throw it and drive it for what it is. Then you can plan a proper power plant resto/ reco.

this will add up very very quickly - cos the bearings will be stuffed, the oil pump should be replaced (even if the mechanic says it doesn't need to be - do it anyway), the crank might need grinding, you've also got the full gasket kit for $100... there are so many things that are probably stuffed but you won't know until he pulls the motor apart. It *might* end up less than $2000...

my $0.02

That sounds average to me - does it inlcude labour?
I am working on a similar quote here for Bromley

1100 engine (short) $1100
4 synch g/box $900
Using all my current head and other bits.

About $700 in labour costs which includes oil, coolant etc

$2700 - All parts recoed by a Sydney outfit. I was budgeting for about 3K.
Add your $500 head

PM me if you want contact details for the Old School Garage in Wagga

Thanks for all that.

I got a quote for some parts, and with cv's and clutch its $800. Ok so now I've spent more than I paid for the car if I go thru with this.

Having fun!!!
