Post subject:  Applying clearcoat to a set top coat (colour)

I sprayed up my car almost 2 years ago now, waited 2 weeks, then started cutting it back with 1500grit. But i was a bit afraid that i was going to cut back to primer (in certain spots i did). Dammit didnt buy enough paint!

So i have been reluctant to cut it and buff it for a polish shine.

Is there a way you can spray a clearcoat over it as is and buff that up instead??

(at the time i was scared of inferior clear coats ruining my top coat) i used quite good paint (acrylic).

Would it be simple to put a little clear over the top of it, without roughing the surface up hardcore?? (my car has basiclly never left the garage in this period)

What does you think people?

cheers - bracketsgirl

Yes it can be done... But why? Just get some more paint and do it again. It will look crap if there is a nice coloour but whoops theres the primer. Nice car but pitty the sh*&T paint.

I am not a spray painter by any means but i have seen it done many times. Someone suggest that you can get another amount of paint and either redo the whole car or just touch up the areas that have become thin - yes you can - just be careful to feather the touch up into the other coloured areas.

Then once you have the coloured base coat you CAN blow on a series of clear coats. Finishing with ghost coats. That is - more thinners than paint.

Then cut these coats back and buff them

I have repeatedly seen very results doing it this way.

2 years!!!

The paint should have settled nicely by now. :P

Dust the whole car with a guide coat...block it back with 600 wet and dry.

Then give the whole car a freash coat of paint...

Take you a day tops,,and look a million dollar if you do it right

I am a painter and I would do just as minimad suggested however do it will 800 anything less will leave abrasive marks in the paint.. However give it a good cut with the sandpaper you dont want exsesive paint biuld up on the car.go 600 then 800 then paint away mate..

ah thanks
very helpfull replies.

hehe i wasnt going to clear coat over bare primer spots!!

If i thought i was gonna cut through, i stopped sanding, thus some areas havnt yet been properly cut!!

the bits that did get cut back i have or am gonna touch up.

Going back over it with some more red isnt a bad idea cause i have scractched some stuff up in my clumsy reassembly.. but that costs $$$ for paint, and ive only got 1/2 a litre left.

i used 2 litres to do the whole exterior. they assured me it would be enough, but i was not practiced. ( i didnt put it on wet enough, thats why)

for reference, this is it here Image

Well that was it a year ago, but i dont think much has changed besides the ammount of dust.

I thik ill probally just spray up the seal covers now, get it on the road and then do a hard cut and more coats later.

depending on funds/enthusiasm

Got enough blocks and engines ????

Coming along nicely though. Yes sometimes it becomes necessary to get it on the road so that its spurs further work. So many projects just sit in garages in that quest for perfection and never get finished.

I just bought my PPG base coat Wednesday. Bloke behind the counter tried to sell my 2 litres for a mini. I insisted on 4. Shouldn't he be trying to upsell me... anyway, I''ve never done it before, so I expect some wastage.
