I know it sounds like I have already answered my own question but do 6x9's actually measure 6x9 edge to edge as they appear in the car?

I also need an idea of how deep they go back in to the cavity. ie measurement from front to back. A rough one here would be fine because I imaging in depend on different brands.

I am designing some boxes for the rear of my van and need this information.

This might have been a thread for the car audio section but I need an answer before tomorrow afternoon. For this I apologise in advance.

Depends on the EXACT speaker.
They vary, the hole, the grille, etc...

You usually get a template with new ones.

Peter.

Buy the speakers, and make to box to suit.
The other way would work but chances are you may have to rework the construction anyway.
:D

As pristic said, exact details and/or templates will come with the speaks.
however if you are creating a box for your van one can assume you will be puting sub(s) and speaks into it.... why not put in 6" Splits instead of 6x9s as 6x9s are just a cheap way of making bass without buying subs... so if you are going to buy a sub, you may as well buy a decent set of splits to go with it.

oh, and back on the 6x9s.... if you are going to box them make sure they are designed for use in a box... many are designed to be used "free air" also if they are designed to be boxed, you will need to check the specs to know how big the box has to be.

I am making wheel arch boxes, not specific speaker boxes. I just thought I would make them a bit oversize to put in a couple of speakers.

I am not a sound freak. I am happy with a couple of speakers in the back and a couple up front.

I plan on putting small round ones up front and thought the bigger 6x9 for the back. I was just looking at strathfield today
