I checked out my plate....

Type - YMA2S1

Car no. 51689

Eng no. 8Y/U/H 10958

Colour - 1/Nurburg White/3

Wiper motor says 64 and radiator surround has 52010 stamped into it

Transport SA say it's a 64, so does wiper motor. My car has no front apron cut-outs, and has wind up windows. Original mounts for seatbelts and an proper hole for remote change. I reckon it's built in late 63 and registered early 64. Although it has remote hole I reckon it's had it's floor pan replaced at some stage. No idea what the radiator surround no. means. And according to Hotybricks website YMA2S1 is an early 850 but that engine no. 8Y/U/H is off of the YMA2S4 body type which is mini minor. It had red vinyl seats when I got it if that helps. I would like to know what month it was built etc.

Cheers Tim.

I think that the ones prior to 1962 had the seatbelt mount high up on the door pillar and after 62 they are lower down :)

My 64 model 850 only had provision for lap belts (not installed) and no pillar mount for sash. When I got my Mini specific seat belt sets they came with spacers and fitting instruction to drill holes in the door pillars - insert the spacers and then bolt it all up- my first major mod to any car  Yet my 63 model I now have has factory installed threaded holes - go figure :?

must be an 850. my mini minor (1966) has the cutouts. my 850 (1964) does not.

i reckon if you look at the "remote hole" it will be butchered and not factory stamped, and you will find some evidence of the original gearchange hole being covered up. if it was welded up and they went to the trouble of grinding the welds as seen inside the car, i reckon that if you look from underneath it will not be so neat.

someone has added the wind up windows is all.

enjoy

Definitely 1964, Chassis and engine number fits spot on for 64, approx delivery 11/64.

No one really knows when full front valence ended, I must admit I would have thought this car would have had cut outs?

Remote hole is surely a later 'addition' 8)

According to the numbers I have in the 850 register (one of the links in my sig below) , it should be around June July 1964 and is only around 80 bodies newer than Meeni's . I'll add it to the list tomorrow along with another I've been sent and revise the register . Oh yeah , 8Y/U/H only means it was an Australian produced 850 motor rather than an English produced one which was 8AM/U/H

The remote hole is perfect. The magic wand hole on the other hand is dodgy as all hell! Cut with a jigsaw I think, has odd cutting lines and isn't straight it's all over the place. So I covered that up myself. Basically I reckon it's had a floor pan replacement, no signs of welding or anything but I haven't look hard enuf...with the amount of bog and fibreglass repairs under the car I wouldn't be superised. Also the last idiot couldn't get 1st gear properly. He'd (or she) put a cooper S heater and it required force to get into gear but I have remote now and stuff. Still with all the mods it's till a humble old 850 I like that 8)

PS if you owned my car please own up I'd love to meet ya! Old rego was SRD 064, now XJD 035

About 2" down from the top - toward the bottom of the triangle piece at the top of the pillar.

My understanding is that some 850's did come with wind up windows. They were made up till 1969 as fleet cars for the Sydney County Council, as it was known then. They also had the short Number plate flap and a different door striker plate.
By that stage sliding windows and long rego plate flaps had been discontinued.

Are you thinking of the Morris Mini Minor which started as 850 and later went to 998 ? It was produced at the same time as the deluxe etc and was the poverty pack version a lot used for fleets .
