It's amusing to read of the rivalry between the camps of round-nose and Clubman versions of the Mini. The pics below were taken in 1978 (yes youngsters, that's almost 30 years ago) and are of my first Cooper 'S'. A 1971 Camino Gold Mk2.
I damaged it quite badly competing at Lakeland Hillclimb early in '78, and decided to repair it by converting to a flip-front of the more trendy Clubman shape. It was also deseamed and had Clubman tail lights fitted. If the same thing happened today to my current Cooper 'S' I'm sure there would be cries of anguish, but 28 years ago it was a step forward.

not just turning Kev.... if you would some wire around him and put some magnets either side, he'd power a small city!

what happened to the car after that Curly? I bet it's not around anymore like an un-uglied Cooper S

I used it as a daily driver and occasional club competition car (I was also racing a Sprite and a Moke at this time) up until the early '90s when I decided to get more serious about motorsport and so re-bodied it into my current Grp Nb car.
The body was sold to a guy up in Benalla (central Vic), but I haven't seen or heard anything since.

yes thats true!!

I spent ages explaining my my mini mechanic passtime to an american artist, going into the history etc, he seemed baffled.. thought i had some go kart i had built myself.

Then eventually it hit him and he goes "ohh. you mean a mini cooper"

..... and so was wrecking 1920's Bungalo houses by fitting aluminium windows and office style ceilings   But people eventually realise that historic originality is worth more.

Having said that, I do like that Clubby Cooper S. 8)

They stopped exporting Minis from UK to USA in 67, so that would be Mk1 and Mk2 Minis. Only some were Cooper or Cooper S.
Pretty hard to register anything built after 75, particularly in Cal.
Many Minis have been shipped over since, funny how some Rover Cooper Sportspacks get retitled as a `66 or whatever..
Hmm... a `66? with drivers airbag and injection... now Minis were way before their time!! :P
