Alrighty....

I fired up my brand new angle grinder and wire wheel this arvo..

I took the drivers side rear seam off to find there was a bit of crumbly stuff underneath.. but not too much , from what i can see....

i gave it a rather half assed effort and took some paint off and it looks like it's the all ridgey-didgonal paint...(one pink layer and one grey)

so now i'm the prime position to realise i have no idea what i'm doing....

well.. i know what i'm doing... but i don't know how to go about it..

ie... what it the best way to use it?
what's angle do i use?
how hard should i be pressing?
is it the side of the wheel the edge or the face?
Do i wax on/wax off or up/down up/down daniel san?

many more questions to come, no doubt.....

You cant hurt the car by using the wire brush, so just play around with methods and work out what you are most comfortable with.

The edge will remove paint quickly but will also wear the wire wheel out faster. If you use the wire wheel horizontally it will remove paint more slowly but a over a wider area.

As for pressure use enough so the angle grinder doesnt bog down or labour, but enough to actually remove paint instead of just scaring it. Let gravity and your body wieght do the work rather just muscling it. So lean in it rather than just your arms and you will be less tired.

Concentrate on one area at time rather than trying to do the whole thing as once. Rememeber once you have removed the pant there is nothing protecting the metal.

Also, do all your flat surfaces first. Edges or anything with holes in it will really chew out the wire wheel.

The paint dust will get into the angle grinder and eventually build up and short it out. If you have a compressor give the grinder a blow out every time you need a break.
Don't let the grinder overheat. It has a lot longer life if you let it cool every now and then.

If you bought a cheap grinder disregard the above, just keep the box and receipt so you can get a replacement one every couple of days.

Thats what I dd. I bought a $15 jobbie and its still going strong. When it karks it I will go back and swap it for new one under warranty.

Please, send it to someone who knows what they are doing.

I bought a Supercrap one, it carked it (switch) 3 weeks after expiry date...
so I put it in box for spare parts, and bought another. It too expired after warranty. Then, I found the original one had decided to work again. Yippee...

I have 4 that work, very handy. Plug them all into a power board.
wire brush + flap wheel + cutting disc + grinding disc.. = no waiting!

so the top stuff was just surface rust... lets hope th same for the bottom

oh.. and yes.. i had a random stabb at some rusty bits nearby..
