Post subject:  Cleaning and Painting Brake Calipers
Howdy,

So, I have a set of Cooper S brakes for Zippy and have cleaned everything up nicely.
Only thing left is the calipers.

I wanted to paint them and I understand something like VHT Caliper/Engine enamel, etc is fine.

Question is, do you etch prime them?
Do you use a rust converter first? (They are not rusty, just a little surface colour)
Should I just wire brush them and then paint?

Also, where do you guys 'bake' parts... Mrs wont let me use the oven. Do they need to be baked?

VHT caliper paint :wink:

Paint straight onto the caliper.
No primer needed.

Its brilliant stuff.

Just remember to clean thoroughly with water when you bleed the system for whatever reason.

The brake fluild lifts the paint rather easily.

They don't need baking.
Only cakes do, not calipers.

Calliper paint and that's it. No need to do anything other than clean them as willy says... Yours aren't that bad.

I used K+H stuff on my calipers.
No priming, or baking needed. Rust converter is optional i guess.
I think I used it on mine, but don't remember.

Baking isn't needed, regular braking temperatures should fuse it on fine.

Just thinking, rust converter probably shouldn't be used,
if it's not cleaned off enough it will mess with the paint or eat the seals.

If it's rusty just wire brush it, then use the VHT caliper paint.
Hmm... isn't it funny that this brake caliper paint (& most paints, except 2 pack) is allergic to brake fluid... :lol:
Maybe they should go back to the drawing board and do us a REAL brake caliper paint....

I overhauled/upgraded the brakes on my BMW last week, and took the opportunity to paint my BMW brakes with engine enamel. Has a higher temperature rating than brake paint.... so I assume it would be a bit better.....

Just gave them a quick once-over with the wire brush then sprayed em up. (the whole lot was disassembled first of course..) It looks alot better if you remove the pads before painting, to avoid painting them. The pictures should speak for themselves....

Years ago i painted the calipers on my honda with the VHT stuff and looked a treat.

I cleaned with brake cleaner aerosol, wire brushed, painted and assembled. Maybe took about an hour (wasn't going for showroom finish!)

If you grind up lead to powder and add it to the paint, I wonder if you now have lead based paint......hmmmm....

Nothing like lead based paint to stick in extreme locations.

Nah, just let the kids draw all over it with HB pencils then spray it :lol:

On my way to get some paint now.
