Post subject: | Horn in the centre - where it should be! PICS INCLUDED |
I took some pics of how I wired my horn to the centre horn button on my steering wheel. I redid the wiring today, as the wire I had used was too flimsy, even with extra electrical tape re-enforcing. The wire had rubbed/twisted through, exposing a bit of the copper, so every time I did a hard turn right, it would honk at me! ![]() ![]() This time, I used a 4mm Super Works general automotive wire from Super Cheap. It's rubbish wire to use normally, but it has an ultra thick casing and is stiff and wont kink. The length of wire is just enough so that you can turn from lock to lock without any hinderence as it wraps around the steering column. I've been driving it around today, and it is not fouling the indicator mechanism whatsoever. I coiled the wire the way I did, because thats what the first try looked like after a few weeks of driving it, so it's safe to assume that is its "most comfortable" position. ![]() ^^^ Without housing. You can see how it coils around. ![]() ^^^ With housing on. All you see if a couple of cms of black wire on the under side of the steering wheel boss, so unless you look for it, you don't see it. Just thought y'all might like to know in case you are interested in doing this yourself. ![]() |

i dunno if that is where it should be, i like been able to reach down from the wheel with my hand on the wheel still, and give it a little press press toot toot. but thats me and i'm not everyone (yet) nice work, looks really neat and a bit sophisticated. mind posting some pics of what the button looks like. (i took the cap of my steering wheel to find a wire attached like an earth. guess it's just ready for something like this if i change my mind) |

I was just searching for this mod as I wanted my horn button to be on the steering wheel as I've been used to driving conventional/common cars and my 1st reaction when I need to use the horn is straight away on the center of the steering wheel. But I want to use an aftermarket horn using the indicator stalk. Is the stock horn wire purple and its earth right? |

Rob the standard wire to the horn (battery feed ) is purple and the other wire on the horn is a purple/black-trace which wires back to the horn button on the indicator stalk. The stalk itself is earthed with a black wire and pushing the button on the end of the stalk completes the circuit for the horn to work. |

Because, Hanra, that would be too easy. Seriously though, there is no 'centre' of the steering column. I remember someone telling me you have to have one of the early types of steering column for the wire to be able to go down the centre. I don't have that luxury. I did this because a) I prefer the horn in the centre and b) the horn bit on my indicator stalk was buggered anyway. |
