Hi,

its been a long while since ive touched a lot of my car, so im quite unfamiliar with a lot of my 'work in progress' from way back.

from the 850 dash control switch (supposedly heater), a yellow wire runs through with the loom into the engine bay, then runs down behind my exhaust, all along the underside of the car until it reaches the rear subframe.

Then to the opposite side from the fuelpump the wire just hangs down and drags along the ground.

what the hell is this wire and why is it making its way to the boot?/

I dont have and neverdid have a heater..

the big question is..can i effectively remove it and not worry?

Sounds like some PO has wired in an "extra" All power to the rear of the vehicle in the 850 came in the loom. May have been for a reversing light or a light in the boot.

the switch that the yellow originates from also has a green wire, but this heads straight into the loom at speedo centre

does it have 12v at any particular time eg when ignition is on or lights etc

Green is usually fused supply and ignition switched. On face value sounds like he was powering some sort of accessory in the rear - I'd rip it out unless you wish to do the same.

well no steamer, but i did disconnect this yellow wire at some stage in my travels..
it wasnt always hanging down like that!

Just out of curiosity then, if 850s dont have a heater do they have a heater switch anyway??asmine does?

mines got a ciggy lighter and hazard lights (but no reverse lights) and i am pritty sure mini's didn't have them.

I don't think the first 850s had a heater - my original 64 model didn't and I added an aftermarket one in 66. It was ramed air from behind the grill with a lever operated flap to open the air flow. There was a manually operated tap for the hot water on the block. Later these taps were operated from inside like a choke cable and an electric fan added but that wasn't until deluxes I think.

My heater is the same as wombats I think the cable is useless so chop it out mini's didn't have reverse lights so if th eauthorities try that tell em to jump. I think it may have been added for something anyway if you find you need it you can always run another one

seeing as it goes to the opposite side to the fuel pump, my guess is that at some time in the past it use to go up into the boot and connect to the battery.

Is your car positive earth? Maybe it was a separate feed to the earth terminal so that a negative earth accessory could be fitted (picking up 12v from the body)?????
