this is an odd one!

driving aorund town is no worries, that's why i'veforgotten about this issue. but it raised its ugly head on the way to geelong today. what happens is in 3rd or 4th gear, when the revs reach about 3500 or 4000, the engine seems to lose a whole lot of power. feels like its suddenly lost a cylinder, but doesnt sound like it.

then, i canmt go over 3000 rpm otherwise it just feels like the engine is being held back, i plant my foot but it does crap all. now, you may think that its clearly a car;y problem, theres a fuel supply issue or my fuel is crap. but i use 98 RON fuel form shell, with valvesaver or whatever it's called. it also only does it when in gear, and for some reason it occurs more uphill. which makes me think its clutch.

BUT... i was driving today and having lots of issues with this. i pulled over to have a slash (in a toilet, for all those people who think peeing in public is disgusting (read:women :P )). armageddon was sitting for about 2 minutes with the engine off, and when i got back in him he was fine???? i got him past 4000 revs and then sat at 4000 for a few minutes, then the power loss kicked in. i knocked it into neutral and rolled along for a bit to see if it was related to my wheels, but nothing. after putting it backj into gear it was fine for a minute or maybe less, then the same problem started. it did this a few times

so my diagnosis is that somethig is getitng pumped into the cylinders and stopping it from firing properly, retarding the spark or something.

I would be looking at the fuel supply as it sounds like calssic starvation, start at the tank and work forward making sure everything is clear, what sort of pump do you have manual or electric, replace any fuel filters with new ones and make sure they are fitted in the right direction of flow :D

Are you running with a fuel filter?? Hope you are...because it will be full of crap!!
What's the inside of your fuel tank like?? ie rusted/pitted :shock:

At speed when planting your foot is it over reving slightly, feels like the wheels aren't going as quick as the motor, maybe oil seal leaks onto the clutch at high revs once the presure builds?

i had a similar problem, whatr was happening was my distributor was jamming(lack of a better word) and i then only had vacume advance, no mechanical. So the engine would still run but would loose power.

yeh its a fuel loss thing. It happened to my car ages ago, on the trip between geelong and drysdale. if you accellerate it feels like the car is dying, but if you stop accellerating you cxan feel the car choking. MIne was a fuel pump issue, but its classic symptoms of fuel loss. And i used to pull over and kill the engine as well to make it better.

I would agree with it being the fuel filter.

Did you know that you according to SU you do not need a fuel filter with an SU because they are designed to allow anything that will pass through the pickup strainer will pass through the carby. :wink:

The reason for a fuel filter is not to keep things out of the engine, it is to stop the carby (or injection) from blocking up.

The mini has a strainer on the pick-up pipe and some also have a strainer in the fuel pump. The bits that get through will be tiny, tiny enough to go through the SU but big enough to block up a Weber or injection. The engine will burn these tiny particles without any damage.

i'm running an SU with 1 1/4 carby (i think? maybe its 1 1/2)

i was thinking fuel starvation, but it doesnt do it when i put it into neutral and rev it to 3500????? i'll have a look tomorrow, i'm doing the brakes

oh, and Duc, :lol: is all i have to say to you!!!

When you are parked in neutral it will rev ok because you are not under load. It will only need a little fuel to reach full revs.
When you are under load it needs much more fuel to run.
So it will rev ok while you are sitting on the side of the road but as soon as you take off it will start to run out and start missing.

ahhhhh ok well i shall ahve a look at the fuel filter tomorrow.

also i'll do plugs and points while i'm there!
