Part of the reliability problems of my van when it was on the road was the 40 y.o. wiring that had be botched in a few places by previous owners, as well as corroded connectors etc.

Now electronics is my area, so rewiring it myself without buying another harness, doesn't scare me.

My question is, where to source the wire and connectors needed?

I'm thinking I would need about 20 different colours, max length about 3m for only a couple. Buying even a bunch of small spools probably would be a waste?

No the wiring shouldn't be all that hard but.....
At some point you will probably sell the car on. Rewire it with the original wire colours so that the code resembles the colour codes in the wiring diagrams. Those colours and wires are still available from places like Ashdowns on spools etc and its probably better quality than supercheap stuff.

Dont say that you will make up new diagrams to suit your new code because either you or the new owner will lose it and some poor bugger is going to be scratching his head with a manual trying to figure it all out.

There is actually a common colour code for all lucas wired cars, like white wires are ignition and the trace is so you can tell which one goes where and blue is for headlights and so on, I used to have a list of colours and such but have misplaced it but I will have to find it so I can finish the lotus looms

When I rewire a mini from scratch I'm doing the whole lot in 2 colours or less,
just to make life that little bit more fun for the next owner.

Keep the old loom and use as pattern. Mark what goes where and note the ocnnectors by looking at the loom. Make list and toddle to your local elecronics shop.

HAHA! I just rewired with old loom when restiring my car replaced anything that looked dodgy and anything the shorted out (most of it) and now i've got a mass of red and green and blue wires that had tages but they fell off, good luck next owner your gonna need it..but my dad said im not allowed to sell my car so next owner...My dad! Yeah btw new loom is cheaper after all the dodgy narva connector (get from dicksmiths or similair much cheaper) and wire (same not from sprint or autobahn too expensive) it's cheaper to buy a new loom.

As mentioned above, go to Vintage Wiring Harnesses website vinwire.com.au. They will use the factory wire colours with cloth braiding and lucas connectors to produce a harness which looks original. All connectors are soldered and very sound. When I got mine I gave them a list of all the electrical bits and pieces, brands, part numbers etc and a list of the accessories I wanted wired in. For example relays and switches for spotlamps, relays for hi and lo beams, upgraded wire for the bigger alternator, switch and relay for reversing lamp, fuel pump cut out switch, tacho, extra fuse box, etc etc. They take a little while to do the job (didn't worry me as I had plenty of other work to do while I waited), but its great quality, far easier than trying to build your own, and quite possibly works out more economical than the hours / days you will spend trying to nut it out yourself. Instructions come with the loom and its labelled to tell you which wire gets plugged into what. I replaced all bulbs, cleaned up all electrical components, put in H4 headlamps at the same time. Only problem was feeding the rear loom from back of car (sedan)through roof and down the front A pillar. Got there in the end slowly pulling old loom from front of car connected to new loom. Don't forget to disconnect interior light before you start pulling through!! I was amazed that the full loom and all electrical components worked first time - I have less mechanical and electrical iknowledge than a gnat.

We have a laser wire marking machine at work!!! Its for labelling every piece of new wiring that we install into aircraft, regardless of how big/small it is!!!! U can put a label on the wire to advise wat part of the cct its in!!! Is $100 grands worth so not really available to the backyard mechanic!!!!

A mate wired up his HQ race car with the laser printed wire. All the wires were white with very small writing on the side saying what it did. It was the biggest pain in the arse I have ever worked on. It is so much easier looking for a green/blue wire than trying to read every wire in a loom.

i m 3/4 the way through it, i remade the w'/harnes in my mini all i have left is the fuse box(different thread) which will be mounted near passengers foot, i made it from scratch with 6 different colours, making sure ground and only ground were black, and engine was blue.

rewire it your self because you look at the stock wrieing diagram in my dads stag and mga and you think what was friggen stupid, eg: the park lights and the indicators are on the same curcuit thanks to sharing the same fuse, the wiring in my celica isnt the smartest either, most patterns go battery + ignition + instrument + switch + fuse then ground, if this item is short curcuited somewhere before the fuse box which there is a good chance of happening the fuse will not blow,

Yeah colours are heaps quicker to identify, but CASA and the rest of the Aviation world think this is a better method. Mainly for the fact that the wires wont discolour, and u dont always need a cct to find out wat all the wires actually are. U just read wats on em!
