Mayte,

Many will tell you Its the ultimate grind.
Put it this way, its being sold in the UK, NZ, AUS, etc... for a road car that will be driven 'spiritedly' its great.

Yes, I will have one in mine :)

Peter.

Just what are you expecting from it ????
A hot camshaft is just one of many bits that go towards a performance package. A hot camshaft changes the valvle timing and valve clearance openings and can make and good motor hard to start and drive.

I have never driven a car with an RE13 and I have heard its good for fast road engines. Notice I said fast road engines. That is an engine with head modifications, better carbies and better exhaust gas extraction. I actually think that a hot cam in a stock engine, withot the other bits, would reduce performance rather than enhance it.

Increased horsepower and performance comes down to four things and four things only.
How quickly you can fill the cylinder with fuel mixture.
How fully you can full the cylinders
How big the bang and how fully the mixture burns
How quickly you can exhaust the burnt mixture.

To achieve that involves a lot more than just a hot camshaft but along the way you need the hot camshaft..

Absolutely what Mike said.

I was taking it as 'he is fitting a camshaft no matter what'... and in that regard, the RE-13 is a great cam for fast road cars... but I dont know much about the 731 grind.

According to GR the RE13 is a bit much for small bore street engine. If you have a chat to him you will find he has other grinds more suitable for the street. 8)

There are 3 versions of the RE13..
one for smallbores
one for big bores
one for turbos.

I've run a 731, a Camtech VP3, and an RE13 one after the other in the same spec 1310 (fast road spec), with standard S rockers:
The RE13 had more midrange than either of the others, bottom end just as good as the 731, top end similar to the VP3.
The VP3 had a good top end, better midrange than the 731, but lousy at bottom end (compared to the others).
The 731 was pretty lazy at the top end, midrange not that great either...

In summary, I'd say the 731 was the cam for all seasons back in the 60s, but the RE13 eclipses it.
I've driven RE13 also in various 1098s, no way would I say it's too much for a daily traffic driver.

yeah Graham has reccomeneded the RE-13 for my road going 998 that we are building... but in saying that the cam that he is gonna put in the motor of his Van (998) will be not as crazy as the re13. but as Ben says.. speak to god himself and he will tell you

^^ That sums it up the best, speak to him and he will ask you questions trying to size up what you want from the engine, what you are going to do with it (e.g. I run air con and want to be able to drive it across the bridge in peak hour), and how you will drive it. Based upon my discussion with him and the fact that torque was more important to me than outright power, he felt that he had another more suitable cam for a 998.

my 1098, when its built is going to have a Piper HR255... that along with a HIF44 on a GR manifold and some decent 3-to-1 extractors should make for smooth daily driver...

the good thing about the Piper HR255 over the RE-13 is that pulls from a little lower (about 2000rpm over 2500 on the RE-13) and has slightly more torque lower down so it might not get the same speeds as the RE13, but the extra torque, lower pull range and smoother idle makes it better in traffic for a daily driver.

if you are going to use the car in any racing you'll probably wany a RE-13 tho..
