I'd like to put a towbar on my cooper, but the designs I've seen all look like you need to drill holes in the boot floor, which I don't want to do

does anyone have a design that is solid, but only mounts to the subframe? or is this a dumb idea given the subframe only mounts with 8 x 5/16 bolts... :?

I'm looking at towing a small trailer with an engine in it back from Sydney

The old one I have here bolts to the subby at back, and thru the boot floor at front. Most I have seen do this.
I don't see why a plate couldn't be welded to the front of subby, and bolt it there instead. Gotta be stronger than the boot floor...
I'll find a pic.
If you are interested in it I can bring to MDU.

If you go to any reputable tow bar specialist (and you should if you want to tow with a mini) they will weld a plate on the boot floorfor the small end to strengthen the small ends mounting point as the boot floor in a 40 year old mini isn't the strongest point to mount a tow bar.

If you think two bolt holes in the floor will upset you what about the plug? most will want to drill another hole the attach the seven pin flat plug to the outside of the rear valance.

Hi, my 76 has one under the bum at the moment (sorry no pics) that follows the subframe across the back and up each side with a rib of steel up the centre of each side. must weigh heaps but is really solid.

bugger.... I was hoping someone would have a bright idea.... I want to tow the trailer TO Sydney, not just on the way back - the alternative is sit the motor & bits on the passenger floor. Time is running out and the trailer still has to be pulled out of the paddock and fixed up!

Kev's and Mick's both bolt to the floor of the boot, and the problem with running to the front of the subframe is that the exhaust mount and the left to right brake line gets in the way.....

thinking thinking.....

Steve.E, don't worry about the socket, I'll use a ribbon type cable and keep it in the boot, just bring it out when I need it, no holes!

Just put the stuff on the passenger follr , assuming you're travelling alone of course , but strap them in well for a trip of that distance . Have you put a general appeal out for anyone else travelling past your way with a truck or trailer that has room for your bit's ?
