to all my fellow MK 2 Cooper S owners, I've had a bit of an idea...

since we (or most of us) only have an ADR compliance plate, we don't have any way of reconciling our engine numbers to our body numbers, to tell if the engine is the original or not. There was a thread a few weeks ago that listed the original car and engine numbers of a couple of cars (1500 and 2000) - I compared those numbers with mine and found that my engine is definitely the original for the car.... the production count numbers are spot on

by my reckoning, the first MK 2 S should have had the engine number somewhere around 9FXEY 53871

so count forward from 53871 to your car number - 500, and you should get a number close-ish to your engine number

eg: 53871 + 2286 - 501 = 55656 (6 numbers off my engine number)

variances in engine number sequences over the 2400 cars would be attributed to engines failing on the production line, falling off the production line or being sold for racing or blowup replacements etc...

Its very hard to ascertain correct engine/car numbers for Mk2 Cooper S , as they don't go in any logical numbering sequence . The first Mk2 Cooper S produced , car number YG2S4 501 had the engine number 9FXeY 51373 . The last Mk2 Cooper S produced , car number YG2S4 2919 had the engine number 9FXeY 56258 . The engines where supplied from the UK in containers , in no particular numbering order and when unloaded here where lined up in no particular order and fitted to the cars in no particular order . There is quite a difference between the first and last engine numbers , 4885 in fact , much more than the 2419 cars produced .

EDIt : The same is also true of Mk1 Cooper S production , with the numbers starting at approximately 36110 through to around 51767 , a difference of 15657 !!!!! for the 4986 mk1's produced
