Hi guys it's been a while since my last question (I'll leave that for another post).

I've noticed my oil in the dashpot keeps running dry. There's no signs outside so I'm presuming it's getting sucked into the engine.

Anyone know the reason why?

Hmmm.. If you over fill the dashpot then when it fully rises to the top the excess will find its way into the engine and be harmlessly burnt.

There shouldn't be a way where the engine simply sucks all the fluid out though. The air (and all it contains) being sucked into the engine wil ltake the path of least resistance ie - straight in through the throat.

How much fluid is going ?????

It's goes down to the bottom of the neck if that makes sense. It may even be further.
The weird thing is it disappears even when it's not going and just parked in the driveway.

If the car can stand for a while then take out the dash pot - stand it up right in something that wont damage the needle and fill it with something easily seen - like transmission fluid.

If it is leaking out then you will be able to see the fluid traces, proabably down the needle. It may have a crack or a separation somewhere.

it varies - some people say ordinary engine oil, others say light sewing machine oil and a lot say use transmission fluid.

and if you've got twins, a shandy of a couple of different ones may be required to give them both the same dampening

Tim, I was gonna suggest what Mike said, but maybe start off with something thin (petrol) so it doesn't take so long to seep through.....

you could roll it in flour and look for the wet spot

I'm using Automatic Transmission fluid but maybe it's too thin and causing my problem.

I've got another carby so I'll swap the dashpots over and try that on the car while I experiment with the one I pull off.
