or how big a bolt or two do I need? I need to make up some sort of attatchment point to bolt to the 8x2 inch floor joists over my garage so I can hook the winch onto to lift the engine. I figure a piece of 2" angle bolted to the joist with a hole in it to take a hook but just need some confirmation on size of bolts to take the weight - any ideas?

The other thing I could do is bend up a U shape from some 1/2" threaded
rod and put nuts and washers either side of the joist. Do you think that would be strong enough?

It's only ~140kg, but better safe than sorry.
Go the U-bolt idea, & use double nuts on it.

I'd use 1/2 inch rod, not threaded.
Nothing wrong with a bit of overkill.

Block and tackles and all manner of gantries were once the way to go lifting engines. The modern hydraulic hoists on wheels make it so much easier to lift a mini motor.

This is particularly so when it is a pot jointed variety and up on jack stands with the upper ball joints droppped. The mini cant be pushed out of the way and the hydraulic hoist is simply wheeled backwards with the engine up high enough to clear the body etc.

The risk of something breaking and every thing crashing down is minimal. They are cheap enough to hire and not that expensive to buy.

If you must use a block and tackle then make sure you have posts vertically aligned to the joist, on either side of the car, to help support the load.

Thats only two people standing together on the floor above  Floor joist will handle that easy.

My Mini is sitting(standing) on wheeled dollies under each wheel so easy to push around

I've picked up 170Kg worth of engine with two 5/16 unf screws.

Don't make any sudden movements though!
