As some of you may know I am having trouble starting my mini :cry: Now it maybe my coil.... I got my multimeter and tested the volts...

Now this is strange from -ve to earth is 12 volts and from +ve to earth is also 12 volts, but between -ve and +ve it reads no volts...

Also where does the silver cylinder/drum thing (condesner) connect to the coil? As pictured

I'd put the big condenser in the round filing cabinet myself....just make sure your distributor has a condensor on it.

If the points are open and then no current is flowing, yes you wiil see 12V between both coil terminals and earth. This is normal.

I don't see 12v betwenn both terminals only betwnn termianals and earth..

How do I know when points are open

You don't see 12V between the 2 terminals because they are connected together, by the primary winding... :wink:
Take off dizzy cap and look, but if you do have 12V from <-> terminal to earth, they are open, or farked...

How can i tell if they are farked? If they are is it new points I need?

The points should be set to .015", with the points rubbing block sitting on top of the dizzy cam.
Hard to explain properly here, check a workshop manual or get somebody to show you.

Best method of inspection is take the points out and look at the contacts. Take note how the wires are connected.
If only lightly worn they can be cleaned up with a points file or oilstone.
If badly worn or burned, get a new set.
Make sure they look just like yours, there are at least 4 different types.

When fitting new points, put a light smear of grease on the cam... or it'll wear the points' rubbing block real quick.

But .....make sure you thoroughly clean any oil or slurry left on the points after you do this :idea: Bright shiney, dry points faces will give you the best chance of starting your engine.
