Post subject:  Help with passing RWC

Hello everybody!

I'm just about to get my 63 850 on the road but I think I'm going to have a problem. A previous owner has had weber carbies in it and cut the firewall to fit them in. It has been changed back to twin su's but the hole is still there. To add to this mess, these early cars had the body number stamped on the left hand side and the cut has removed the first few digits. The problem, will Vicroads have a problem with some of the number missing and/or will they have a problem with the lager hole in the firewall. The hole has been straightened up and I have put some angle around it to make it more presentable. I also have installed some sound deadener over the whole of the wall, purchased from a mini parts supplier. So it looks all neat and tidy. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Its possible you might be in trouble.
Perhaps you could find out the cars correct number by ringing vicroads and tracing
its rego history.
Good luck. 8)

(And where abouts are you on the peninsula?) :D

i have heard it is extremely difficult and can be costly to trace vehicle history in victoria, since when is something that is affiliated with the government ever helpful.

the correct number would be on the previous rego documents wouldn't it?

I hope it isnt a drama but feel it could be. When I had my mini regoe'd they made me paint stripper the paint off the number so they could see it. Not happy about that but if i didnt they would not rego me.

Does anyone with an 850 know if the body number appear anywhere else on the car? Apart from the VIN plate and the fire wall.

In NSW they don't care what the number is - just that it has one. I wouldn't expect Vic to be any different. If anything they seem more relaxed about the whole deal down there - do they have annual inspections these days in Mexico??

Think of a number, stamp it on the rad shroud and Bob's your uncle.

As for the hole in the firewall....all Minis had them (yours is just a bit bigger) No one will notice if you have the sound deadener blanket in place.

Thanks Everybody,

I thought the hole in the firewall shouldn't be a problem but I put it out there to see what ideas people had. We still don't have anuual inspections, no polly is willing to put it up as an idea, could be political death down here.

The body number is on the old reg, and vicroads has a record of it. It's just that some of the numbers are missing. I guess it is still illeagle to stamp in the complete number on the rad cowling?

I don't see why. Illegal to change for sure. But, if the old number is damaged (or the panel its attached to needs replacing) then there would not seem to be a problem about re-installing the number. If the block is decked the original engine number has to be restamped...

My Mini does not have a number on the firewall; only on the rad shroud and front crossmember. Both of which are unacceptable to the NSW system because they are "removable" (stamped on plates attached with screws). We have agreed to use the "FE" number...

Cheers, Ian

Sorry about my ignorance, but what is 'FE' number

Its a mystery number that Pressed Metals put on components of Minis built in the UK. UK Minis have a number pressed onto a plate welded to the inner guard above the rad shroud (and some have a similar (but different) number on a plate in the drivers footwell).

No one seesm to know what the numbers wre used for and no record of them has been retained. Because they all begin with "FE" and are found in the front areas of the cars they are known as "front end" numbers.

They do look very "official" however....

Cheers, Ian

*cough cough*
What exactly do vicroads check? Is it just the serial numbers / proof of ownership?

I have been told by a few different sources that they come out to your car and check the VIN plate and the engine and body numbers but while they are looking at these they can pick up any obvious defects and start giving you a headache. Frankston had a pit and could ask you to drive it over if they suspect your roadworthy was a dodgee. But now all the vicroads are under staffed and as long as you are nice as pie they don't have the time to do much.
