if they are the newer ones they will have 28 clicks when you turn the adjuster in a clockwise direction, the first few clicks can be hard to feel but each click will make the shock firmer to compress and open, usually good to start with them fairly soft say 3 or 4 clicks from the start and when you do adjust just try a couple of clicks clockwise at a time

yep that would make them fairly old but they should be ok just half all the numbers I said above and adjust one click at a time and start at 2 clicks, thanks Makka

shocks should not take of like that they are supoused to take away the springing .....
to stiffen the ride

Only gas shocks will behave like that, oil shocks will stay were ever you leave em just the force neede is changed, your silly car has gas shocks

Spax did make gas shocks and maybe yours are the old gas ones in which case the adjustment really only effects the compresion side

so does the adjustment affect some little valve which lets gas or liquid flow thruogh the thing

ALL hydraulic (as against the old pre-WW2 friction type) shocks have oil in them. Won't work without it.
So-called GAS shocks are hydraulic, and are charged with nitrogen under some pressure, instead of just free air (which BTW happens to be ~80% nitrogen anyway). Yes they have oil too.
I believe the gas under pressure just makes the oil less likely to aerate.
