This came out of my GT motor today. It's one of those 'canister' oil filters, not the spin-on type. This motor hasn't been turned over in 25 years.

Is this type of filter very 'old-school'? Should I keep it as historical memorabilia, or chuck it out?

yea well a few times in the past I have thrown out something that turned out to be rare / collectable / interesting. So now I am asking before throwing......

Just put it in a zip lock bag and stash it somewhere for later.

Whether or not they are available now, unless you have a glass canister tube thing
for it to sit in, nobody will know what's in there, except you.

You used to be able to get the felt filters but I am not sure nowdays. The part number was HYL103/1 (the same number without the /1 is the paper filter) They were a lot better filter than standard.
They were also used on the Cooper S.

ahhhh ok. I have seen the paper ones before, but not this type. Just a more expensive period filter then ey?

Felt was specified on the Cooper S, but not generally used on the other A series.
These days most people bung a spin-on head on, it's way less messy to change.

I've had a thought that this is maybe why they had such ridiculously high oil pressures from factory (100 psi cold).

To get a decent oil flow rate you would need to really smash the oil through those felt filters with this large amount of pressure I would think.

Years ago I used to backwash these oil filters with petrol, dry and re-use them.
Daddy had 44 gal drums on the farm, with a hand pump.

U can pick up the stocko cartridge oil filters from Repco still. They are Ryco brand.

I am pretty sure I have a felt one that is unused. It's yours. Being that this is a resto to original it would be going to a good home.

Yep you can still get the felt HYL103s new. FSA branded I think? I'm not that fussed by them personally and I doubt a concourse judge would know if you were using one or not!
