Post subject:  Summer in the Mini K!
With summer on the way and hot days in an unairconditioned brick to be the norm, i was just wondering if i can by any chance use my heater to get some fresh air through the car...

Ive got one of the old old school heaters which is in a little box in the engine bay. The general concept is air flows into the box from the grille, gets heated, goes to feet and demister.. drivers side only. the faster you go the more air you get (sorry officer, i was only trying to stay warm.. :? ).. From inside the car i can select a range of temperatures with my advanced climate control system - namely "pissweak" and "shit-all"... otherwise known as on and off..

ANYWAY, my q is.. is there a way i can bypass the water inlet for the heater so that the heating element doesnt work and i just get fresh unheated air flowing through? I know, it wont be much but everything helps!

See on the doors, there is one lever which you move to get out, there will be a second, that winds the windows down. 8)

If it's the proper factory one, the heater flap (on heater) will allow you to get cold air, warm air, hot air or no air. But it's tricky to set.
Also the foam inside may have fallen off the flap, then it's worse.

The cold air goes up the chute between heater matrix and inner guard. :wink:

If you turn the water off (by putting a tap in the head) the engine will run hotter in summer.. not a good idea, IMO. I use the heater to keep my 1310 cool!

the pommy bricks never had the joy that is QUARTER VENT WINDOWS - open them and a back window as well, adjust the angles so that you get a nice airflow without blowing your hair about. I do that when driving on a hot day with one of my daughters with long hair in the passenger seat, and their hair doesn't get messy.

Stupid poms with their sliding windows then going to a full window - bah!

My 850 has one of those, and yes the foam on the flap is a bit sad, but i'm stuffed if i can work out the "get cold air" setting i always seem to get hot air no matter what. That was fine in winter, but now summer is coming.... The flap seems to divert the air from the heater matrix either into the cabin, or into the engine bay. Mine does not seem to want to completely shut off air flow to the cabin at all

I run a heater core under the bonnet as an extra radiator, and next winter I'm planning on putting a heater back in, and having a 3 way tap, one way goes to the heater, the other way goes to the extra rad, and the other is off. You guys could do that - the extra rad heater core under the bonnet really helps cooling, and it'll mean your cabin heater isn't getting hot water, which is what makes it hot inside the car :wink:

Mick, it relies on the outer edge of the foam to seal off the hot air and give you cold. Get some new foam & stick it on the flap.. :wink:

Dr - it's on the long list.....i think i will pull it out with the engine and fix all the seals and leaks (as much as you can on a mini). i found there was some gaffa tape over the bottom of the tappet cover above the fuel pump on the weekend. Gee i wonder where all the oil is coming from?

Mini Sunshine = major sunburn for me. hope you have an inside line on sunscreen :)

Fit Air Con?

A few of the parts importers have it available off Japan-spec Minis. But it's not cheap!

No i just could not do that to a poor little 1964 850. half of the 28hp on tap at the flywheel would be taken away by turning on the a/c :(

Point taken. All these 1988-89 Minis coming from Japan with air are only 998's. Must be slooooow.

bung in a jap motor with air con already on it - if the pump will fit under the bonnet and you can find somewhere for the condenser, and you can keep the engine cool when the AC is running...... ummm could be tough - I'll let you know how I go with it ;)

A mate of mine is fiitting a 6cyl blown toyota motor in to a very standard FE holden for someone, has the aircon fitted. Would you believe it's still running the 3-on-the-tree gearbox!
