Post subject:  new radiators or recored old ones

I have seen a few different radiators for sale at various places.

The top tanks appear to be a slightly different shape to OZ ones. Are they the Pommie import ones?

Can you buy a NEW radiator that looks exactly the same as an Aussie one?

I don't think you can, I believe they all have the UK shapped header tank.

The Pommy ones have pressed grooves running across them.
I have a Pommy super 2 core in Barney and a new Pommy 3 core in HaHa.

Vibration already has shaken the side brackets from the top tank of the latter. There are no copper rivets like an Oz radiator, just crappy solder, so I'm about to get an Oz Cooper S/Deluxe one re-cored.

If I get a good price, I'll do 2, they are more durable than the UK ones IMO.
AND, they have a drain plug.... unlike the Poms- another pet beef of mine. :x

Can you remove the header tank off the new one and replace it with the original type? Are the tops the same shape to solder on?

I have been told to stick clear of the new ones around especially the extra cores. Id get the old one recored if it needs it. A good descale and back wash can be all thats needed.

Oz radiators from Cooper S/Mini Deluxe onwards all had 16 gills (fins) /inch for better cooling.

Pommy ones are generally 12/inch.
The 3 core UK one needed the inner guard cut a bit to fit in my 1970 car- the bottom tank is wider.
The fins on the super 2 core are particularly fragile.

Braze or silver solder it and kiss goodbye to the soft solder that all brass tanked rads use to hold the tanks on...

Nah I'll hang it up in the shed, and use a nice Oz S one with new core, done by my local Chinese radiator man. 8)

Unless yours is totally fudged Anton I would like some others have suggested get it re-cored
descaled and pressure tested to ensure its like new.
They dont make them as good as the originals :x
