Post subject: | Difficult to select 1st |
As the heading says... Having diffuculty selecting 1st gear (only when statonary). When rolling forward slowly it goes in ok, which leads me to believe it could need a clutch adjustment, not a syncro problem. Any thoughts or advice. Thanks. |

Try pumping the clutch rapidly, then selecting first. |

me too santo! mines a new box, so i am assuming its the linkage under the gear lever somethign about a rod with an eye hole in it, that the gear lever goes into. i (and quite a few others) pull it down towards 2 first, and then back up to 1 kinda helps |

It's a common rod change problem when the linkages wear out. As Duc says it is wear in the lever in many places, the biggest offender is this part here: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Mini-Rod-Change- ... dZViewItem |

Me too Santo! And there is only a very small range of very slow crawling that lets me get it in 1st. I suppose its no real problem, Just a little annoying. |

Ah, the joys of owning a mini... ![]() Yeah... Joy! What makes it worse is i've installed a KAD quickshift and the closer ratio makes it harder to engage... (BUT quicker to change ![]() ![]() Lillee... Does that steel sleeve connect the rod to the selector shaft? |

Santo, i wouldn't worry too much about wear in the mech - That car has one of the tightest gear linkages i have ever driven. I think the problem was/is elsewhere..... ![]() Meh, just keep drivin ![]() |

AHAHAHAHHAHAHA. My 850 usually needs the 2-1 trick, I thought of it all on my own about a year ago and figured I was the only one doing it till I read this thread. I'M NOT ALONE ANYMORE!!! Shard |

you guys..... adjust the bloody thing!!! screw the little bolt in the clutch housing out 1 turn, pump the pedal a couple of times, then try getting it into 1st.... it may have magically fixed itself! - if it hasn't, then screw it out another turn |

I would not be happy with a gearbox that I had to select second before I selected first... |

Half the time it doesn't release unless i'm still at the lights. If i'm at a stop sign and still creeping you have to do the 2-1, better then trying first and only getting it in 50% of the time, and the other half you almost end up stalling playing around. Shard |

I had the same issue. Had to go 2nd, then 1st when statinery. Adjusted the clutch and now right as rain! ![]() |

Shard that's a 3 synchro gearbox.... the synchromesh ring just doesn't exist, your gearbox isn't designed to allow you to change into first while you're moving, same as reverse.... |

I screwed it out 1 turn to begin with, it Seemed better with the engine running but not driving it, so brought it out 1 more turn. Will drive it after work. Thanks guys. |
