Post subject:  Morris Mini Matic 1100 questions...

Does the 1968 morris mini matic come with hydrolastic suspension or dry cone?
Also, are these an ok starting point for rebuilding into a manual, or is that just plain
butchery of something that could perhaps be more valuable as Automatic.
The car in question only goes in reverse, the forward gears I am told are not working.
As the body goes, I would put it at 60% ok with no major rust. How are these 1100 engines?

Ideas pls....

they only came with hydro
they are better left (worth more and rarer) auto, but do what you want :)
mini matics only came with 998 engines, willy's matic has been upgraded with an 1100 from a morris 1100..

the auto gearbox can suffer badly if the wrong oils are used..
good condition late model replacement 998 auto's are available from brickworx.com.au

thanks for your fast reply there... Well that is a good start I guess? Not so good being hydrolastic. Ok, so now that I am straight on this that the engine is 998, you say they are worth more left alone as automatic. If say I could find a replacement box, what would the value be expected? i can't imagine very much at all, only because I can't see the poiunt of Automatic in a fun car that ought to be driven through the gears...

well the mini matics are kinda semi auto so you can select all the gears if you want, or leave it in drive.

hydrospastic suspension is very very comfortable, but does pitch back and forth under acceleration etc, which can be fixed....

I can, they are more fun to drive than a manual 998, remember it's a 4 speed. Obviously not as fast, but still funner. 8)

Hydro suspension is ok too, remember that all cooper s's came out with it in oz.

Best off to buy what you are after than modifying something, it costs heaps to change over stuff like that compared to buying something close to what you want/need.

Well, my second thoughts on this would be to put in a second hand auto box if needed, clean up the car as best as possible without spending too much and then sell it to fund a better mini. My $1000 may buy this mini, as I am a mechanic and spraypainter, getting it up going for resale will not be an issue, I should have some dosh left of the grand to get a box if needed and a few chrome bits for getting it looking nice again.

If you have reverse only, the forward clutch plates are worn out.
Happens with high mileage or if car has been stood for years with dirty oil in.
This is an easy fix, can be done with motor still on box, but out of car.
2 new plates and the side & front gaskets costs around $83.
13secmini did his recently.

I kinda suspected it might be the clutch plates as this car has been sitting for years and years, and no doubt never had its oil changed. I would go as far as saying i might be able to pick this car up for maybe 500-600 beers and potatoes. I will find out on Sunday after minis at the mill. I will be taking a drive out there to see the mini's in action.
