Hi all,
the time has come to move out of willy's thread. Sorry willy, and thanks to willy for renting me his thread space...
After a much enjoyed day at Mini's at the mill, my partner and I spotted a 1972 clubman in the Sunday Mail for $550. So off we went, cash in hand and bought it. An absolute bargain, advertised with spare engine and spare parts. All that was missing is the bumpers that he had thrown away because of being dented. The chap that sold the car to me was going to rebuild it ground up, he had started, but not finished. Attached are some pics I took last night when we went to buy it. I know it isn't the round nose I was looking for, but I wasn't going to turn my nose up at this car what so ever.
The only problem with the engine is that it needs a new seal/gasket at the top cover on the mech. fuel pump. All new brake lines were replaced, new dizzy, new alternator, recon starter motor. The interior is a bit shabby, but having trimmed out my MX3 in leather, I know how to fix that as I have an industrial sewing machine at the ready. The seller had sanded the car back for respray, and has 4 litres of 2 pack metalic midnight blue and 2 litres of clear to throw in with the car. The spare engine needs a new head gasket, and that is all. So all ye that said it isn't possible, dreams are always just around the corner.... Since this morning, the Mini matic I have looked at has been offered to me for $600, rounnd nose, and not too bad a condition.
Enjoy the pictures......

are you gonna do this one up to sell?

That is one option, rebuild, respray, sell.... This will fund a half decent roundnose, would probably buy the minimatic, do the same, rebuild, respray, sell.... And as of half an hour ago, I have been offered a mini van and a roundnose, both driving, and both well under $1000... If it doesn't rain, it pours. lol, who said I can't find anything apropriate under $1000. Being a spraypainter and a mechanic, I think this little clubman will come up a treat, and not blow out the bank account.

I was kind of surprised it was even still there when we called, I told him it was sold before we got there based on the sellers description over the phone. So, he kept it for me till we arived. there were 3 people that rang up straight after me that were keen also, so I wasn't going to let that one away.
I will most certainly put up pics of progress so those that said i won't find one will roll in their graves eating their hats. I will enjoy this, might just make it really schmick only to rub salt in the wounds... hehehe

Nice find! Although those certain people (me :D ) said you wouldn't find a nice running roundnose for a grand. Clubby's aren't worth as much as yet. Do a good job, it's a big job. Dunno if you'll make profit. A restored 1275 clubby is worth about 5K. That's what My dad paid for his mid-last year. And he hadn't got any interest in it, despite being advertised for two weeks. Having said that mini's of all descriptions have gone up in value since.

slinkey inc Are you forcing me to go get the other 3 offers? I almost would just to prove my point, but I'd only be cutting my nose off to spite my face. Common sense says wait till I finish this one first, then proceed with the next in line. I will keep my reciepts for each car totalling the value of work done, and what the price was to purchase them, get custom painting on the way, all mechanical work done, and we'll see if I can't make a profit. The profit won't be for greed, it will only be there to move on to the next mini. I will do a write up on each car as I go, typical of me when restoring cars. Ever seen airbrushed custom paint under a mini? Me neither, but could be interesting.....

Okay you do that. (I know who's right  Hehe..) Restoring and Doing up are two differnt things. A cheap clubman will be alright to do up but I have never ever, seen a mini sell for more than the cost of doing up, even mates who work at and own specialist mini places haven't been able to do it. With work hours aside jsut the cost of aprts. My engine and box cost 3250, which was and still is cheap. Discs cost 1500 with 90% new stuff. You can get away cheap, but the less you spend the less you can sell for. I've kept all reciepts but stopped adding it up when i hit 10 grand. And I and my dad did ALL the work! But I don't want to ruin your enthusiasim. I'm just being realisitic.

Oh I'd just like to finish this arguement. IMO having a mini, and spending money on it is out the enjoyment of the whole thing. Go and do what you want to do. I have my opinions and you have yours. Have fun  . In closing I love minis. I won't bother to check this thread again, as It's going no where between me and you.

Cheers Tim.
