Post subject:  A Mini Cooper S Story

My father in his young age poured a lot of money in to his cooper s in the 80's about $14,000 which was a lot of money back in those days. People laughed how much he spent on his engine but it was some else appearently, i will list the mods as far he can recollect maybe someone on this forum might own it

* It was a 1968 or 69 Green Cooper S
* Engine 1275CC Bored out to 1310CC
* Pistions where a flat top racing piston made in Germany (company was called or sounded like mole)
* my dad descided to go with a 40/80 Profile which was designed for Hot V8's by Goodmen Racing Devolopment he was strongly advised against it as it would very lumpy and would not run
* Compression ration was 12:1 Required AV Gas 105 octane to run it
* Head was Ported & Polish enlarged stainless steel inlet valves doubles racing springs rated at 12,000 RPM
* Racing Fuel Pump
* Cam shaft was converted to a billited tooth belt drive
* Gear box had straight cut low ration racing gears
* 24 once 12,000 rpm points
* Racing Clutch
* Everything was Blueprinted and balanced by Goodmen Racing Devolopment (who at the time use to prepare Forumla 4 racing engines)
* Lightened Flywheel
* High volume racing oil pump
* Weber
* 3" Sport Exhaust System
* Lower control arms where extended by 1" to create a positive camber
* Electronic Spark
* 3rd Gear would pin Speedo at 130MPH
*Terry Douglas The Mini-King of Engadine who was an ex racing pit mechanic had said out of all the years he had been putting mini's together for race he had never seen a mini with so much power in his life, and that he needed to purchase widest tires they he could find to gain any form of traction.
* the tires where 9" wide
*My grandfather being a police officer said it was no where near suitable for road and should say on a track, he attempted to drive it 4 times, 3 times stalling due to racing clutch 4 time wheel spining taking up 3 lanes trying to control it!!!, in front of his own police station once he stopped the he never drove it again.
* there are many more mods but my father can't think of them all being so long ago, it would go up Heathcote rd at 120MPH easy, and it's steep road.
*It would easily blow v8 away with ease.

With out a lie it would easily take up 3 lanes of road off the mark trying to gain control while fighting massive torque steer.

it was sold to a couple, the gentlemen laughed at my dad for spending so much on it and said that his should have bought a worked v8 like he had and it blow the doors of it, after my dad took him for a drive he told his girl friend that should could not have that it was stupid is was designed for a race track and had way too much power he shited him self by the power it had, she put he foot down. the car was detuned her father put a spacer plate a couple of head gaskets on to lower the compression ratio and also replaced the carbie to make it more controlable on the road.

i wonder if the car is still going??

The Heathcote Rd hill you are talking about is probably Deadmans - coming up from Deadmans Creek funnily enough!! We used to tear down it on our bikes on our way to a swim!

The pistons were probably MAHLE....

Great little story....see if your Dad can remember anything more :wink:

The engine build listed was not an uncommon combination in those days. Pistons were Mahle, forged German made pistons, very good quality. Flat tops with near std chamber sizes would give closer to 12.5 - 13.1 compression. Cams with those numbers were also used. All up, made for very quick car. Nice story, brings back memories. Steve

I bought an S in 1980 with those Mahle flat top pistons. They are still running, in my current 1310 motor.. :shock: good pistons...
But it's only running 10.4:1, now. 8)

Sutherland shire. Southern outskirts of Sydney, on your way to Wollongong.

I grew up around that area - a suburb called Kareela. Went to school in Bangor and used to take the long way home down heathcote rd sometimes in my first Mini. Traffic was always bad on Menai road before they put in the high level bride over Woronora. 8)

It's estimated that in excess of 190BHP is required to push a standard bodied mini past 120mph. Way beyond the realms of a n/a A series engine bar KAD/Jack Knight twin cam headed thing. Sounds like that Cooper S suffered from the same problem that all our minis suffer from, a grossly inaccurate speedo. Steve

Where did you get that figure from? My 70 Cooper S cracked 120mph on Bathursts Conrod straight in 1973 and I have doccuments from the stewards in those days saying so. Apparently it was a big milestone to break 200kph and a speed slip was provided. Given it was a Group C car backed by BMC it couldnt have been to wild. I have rebuilt this original race engine and beside a big head, big cam and a bit of lightening and polishing there is nothing special about it. Any Group N guys wish to comment, would love to know what top speed they get?

I stand corrected it was the 1975 race. Just checked.

Group N Minis regularly see over 200kmh. This is based on accurate tachos not Smiths speedos.

You need around 130bhp (1275 Cooper S) and using a 3.7 diff ratio on a good day you should see over 8200rpm before turn one on the straight at Phillip Island. Not sure what this equates to exactly but it is over 200kmh.

A friend has his speedo connected (120mph) and it nearly brakes the needle off every time he hits top speed at the Island.

I'd think some of the trick road Minis with Hot 1310's etc would be nearly good for 200kmh especially with a 3.4 diff ratio.
