Below the head, on the block at the front, on the radiator side, on a flat bit of metal that sticks out from the block. Some engines have number ground off for various reasons. Someone post a pic, I would be I gotta go eat some dinner!

Yep - found it - many thanks.

86310P - A lot of oil and grime on it plus it is not stamped deep into the metal.

For a LS1275 does this fit the bill? I would really like to know whether it is an original or not knowing the history of my car.

Cheers and thanks for the photo. Really appreciated!
Rob.

86310P would be a "police" number. That is the number that is stamped onto a motor that has lost its number.
The 86 on the start of the number is the year it was stamped.
The P on the end means Police. (they approve the change of number)
It should have a letter on front of the number (N for NSW, V for Victoria, etc.)

Great - thanks for the explanation as all the other engine numbers on this forum are quite different.

Based on the history of this car this kind of makes sense as the previous owner bought it around 1986.

Oh well - it is a shame though as I would like to try to identify what car this engine originated in.

Cheers,
Rob.

Could you post a pic of the engine? I may be able to tell.

First of all, is it a 1275?
From memory the 1275LS engine has a breather on the timing chain cover and a breather on the clutch housing.

Hi there 9YaTaH,

Yep - certainly aware of next Wednesday meeting in Deakin. Am certainly planning on coming along and talking to the Canberra club folk and seeing what you guys get up to.

Hey Morris 1100 - will try to get a few pics for you. After finding out tonight that this may not be the original engine this thought did occur to me that it may not be a 1275 motor. The rego papers always stated that it was a 1275 but then again...

Cheers,
Rob.

Hey there Morris 1100,

I have added a few photos of the clutch area and general engine bay. They can be found on my ****** website at http://www.flickr.com/photos/72144405@N00/ .

Although I am a bit of a handyman I don't have much mechanical experience and no doubt have much to learn.

Any help much appreciated.
Cheers,
Rob.
