Post subject:  Clutch or gearbox problem.....?!?!?!

Hey Guys...
Im a newbie from WA... :)
Just wondering if anyone's had a problem like this- gear clash when changing down from a higher gear to 3rd, 2nd and frist gears. I have to double clutch it when driving to not get a loud crunch noise. I've bled the slave for the clutch but i am really at odds to whether it is a clutch problem, gearbox or fluid problem. Guess its hard to tell but just trying to get an idea... i have a 1974 Leyland Clubman S [998cc i believe]....still in process of getting those spongy brakes done too

thanks

my guess is synchro's....wat box have u got and wat yr?

do u/have u got any idea of what rev matching is? try it if u know how to, its pretty hard when racing but the only real way to down gear while racing without doing too much damage on the gears.....once you get used to having your gas foot in all different angles, its easy and even easier in a mini with all the pedals so close that you can't figure out what is brake and what is clutch.

Does it crunch going into reverse? If not, clutch is OK. Sounds like synchros are worn to me too.

Yep, synchro's are gone. 2nd synchro on my van is shot, but thats fine cause it's no speed demon! (just go round corners in 3rd, hehe)

Pardon my noobyness but can someone explain property to me what double cluthing is. As i understand it isnt it where u put the clutch in take it out of gear let the clutch out and give the accelerator a squirt and then put the clutch back in then into the next gear.

And with heel toeing do u use your heel for the accelerator i struggle to get it right and lack the pressure on the brake peddle.

what oil is used in the motor if it is synthetic there is the start of your worries synthetic's break down in the mini gear box du to the pressure exertide in the syncro's but is it is starting to crunch time for box rebuild and while ya at it work the motor port the head spend big bucks lol

yep, heel on the accelerator.....i know its hard to get some decent brake pressure but hey, its a mini.... just practice slowly around some roundabouts (or maybe i should say the track) and you'l get it right after a week or so....it took me about 6 months to get the idea of having my right foot twisted out of its normal rotation and i think i might finally be pretty close to becoming an expert.

yeah sure it's a bit of a boy racer site but it gave me a fair idea of it...

plus watching tsuchiya do it in "The Drift Bible"

i had the same problem wiht my old clubby, it would crunch
going from any gear into second, the synchro's were shot i think
it did it going into reverse as well by the way. the way i cured the
prob was to slow down before changing down gears, but that took
away the fun of going round corners, so i just flew around
corners in thrid gear - hey what were minis made for  i
think the safest idea would be to get your box rebuilt :(

synchro on 2nd always seems to be the one that wears out first....

heel toe is a bit weird in the name because when i do it (always on the track of course  ) i don't actually use either part of the foot mentioned. because the pedals are so wonderfully close in the mini, i put the ball of my foot, just behind the big toe, on the brake pedal, get good pressure going, then just kind of roll the side of my foot onto the accelerator. Easy to practice at slow road speeds, but when you are trying to brake hard in less than 50m before the corner from top speed then change down to get through the corner it gets much more exciting :D

If your synchros are busted and you just wanna be able to downshift dont try to be too racer like about it. Just slow down put her in neutral chuck your clutch in rev her up a fair bit downshift, let the revs fall while engaging the gear. You loose speed and time due to it being a two part action and not brake and rev at the same time, but most people find the heel in toe difficult and distracting anyways especialy if you dont have a servo and your pedals are at different heights. This way you just drive like a normal road user just adjusting for the worn syncros so as to still be able to downshift.

wow... thanks guys

i had a feeling it was something a little more than the clutch...nah sorry all i know its a 1974 leyland clubby with a 998cc engine. i have a sneaky suspicion too that its a different engine from the orginal but im not sure....has anyone had their gearbox done or got a reconded one from anywhere? im in WA and the only place i think of looking is Minicraft... does anyonw know of a rough price they will charge... jsut a yard stick for me... yeh i do that double clutch thats where i put into neutral, rev her up alot then change into a lower gear...would be nice just to have her normal but she IS a mini!!!!

for those that are wondering how to clean out the inner's i did the diesel fuel trick today and seemed to work ok..i normally use 20W-50 oil but due to oil leaks around diff flange i need to top her up a bit. have emptied her now and gonna try putting some gasket cement around where its leaking....externally... any other ideas?...back to her tomorrow i guess.....will keep in touch
gees i talk alot....!!
