What does one need to upgrade from drums to discs on a 72 stock clubbie?

Is it simply a matter of strapping on a set of calipers, and 12" wheels?

Want some extra stopping power.

You need different outer CV's, swivel hubs, drive flanges, calipers and discs obviously.

Brake hoses, ball joints, and tie rods are the same for drums or discs.

You can run 10 inch wheels with Clubman GT discs, or you need 12 inch wheels with Clubman 1275LS discs.

In my opinion, the only way to go is using the 7.5 or the 8.4 inch discs that were designed for the mini. All these other conversions may be slightly cheaper but they were not designed for the mini.

To do the conversion, you need the disc brake hub (its different to the hub that holds the drum brakes and has the drillings to bolt of the calipers) the disc brake CV (its bigger) the drive plate and of course the rotors, calipers and pads. You can use your current driveshafts which also means you can retain the pot joints and current gearbox.

Its a fairly straight procedure to change over to the discs with about two hours per side and then you will need a wheel alignmentas the geometry will be slightly changed.

Costs - 7.5 disc setup brand new is slightly less than $2000 complete. Second hand bolt ups are around $1200 and reconditionable units start at about $600. The main advantage is that you can still use you 10 inch wheels.

The 8.4 inch disc setup are some what cheaper and a number of mini specialists have them as S/H boltups. They will require 12 inch wheels.

As for the braking improvements - well its really quite phenomenal. All of a sudden a mini will stop. I found initially when i went from drums to discs, that I was braking 50 metres too early at normal driving speeds. I literally had to take the foot off thebrake and roll the last few metres to the lights etc. I am used to it now.

Mini drum brakes are pretty ordinary in design although pundits will tells you that well maintained and adjusted they work well. They may but discs is a whole new ball game.

I personally have no experience with camira or honda conversions and make no comment apart from what I said up top of the thread.

Technically there are different length hoses for the different brakes, and since they should be replaced whenyou upgrade you may as well get the right ones. :D

Clubman GT discs are also more commonly refferes to as Cooper S ones.

I see what you're up to GT! Can't fool me!

Any good suppliers of the second hand setups in Sydney. I know brickworx do them, am I better off getting them from there and shipped?

Many places (like Karcraft) only sell the drum type front hoses now. They work with discs, but watch they don't rub on the tie bars...

drums -> discs - you need a few things.

disc rotors, calipers, hubs (aka uprights), new cv's, tapered wheel bearings. I would suggest NOT buying these parts individually as you may accidently buy parts which you shouldn't mix and match - there are 3 types, cooper disc assembly, (7 inch), cooper S assembly (7.5 inch) and later disc assembly (12 inch wheels, 8.4 inch).

If you choose NOT to use one of these approved setups, your car may NOT be road legal (may depend on state).

How much are you willing to spend?
