Post subject:  Clubbie Engine Block

I am restoring a shell which came without an engine. I am putting an engine together for the '76 Clubbie. I have 3 blocks, all of which will suit my purpose

My question is - for that vintage (1976) which block should I use? Does it matter for rego purposes?, or it doesn't matter for any reason?

10YCTaHxxxx
10002xxx
10017xxx

Looking forward to your advice.

Original for a `76 would have been 99H/889/AJH probably.
This is a 998 block (dimensionally identical to the 3x 1098 ones you have already).
Whether you have grief using the others depends on the inspector and his view of the Mini world.
They can take a dim view if the replacement engine is older then the original, as all of yours are.
OTOH, some just don't care about these semantics, as long as there is a receipt for the motor and all engine & body numbers are in order.
They take the view that a 998/1098 Mini block is a 998/1098 Mini block (same) and argument is confined to the stamped impressions on the top.

The correct engine for a 76 would have a 99 prefix. (a 998 motor)

The 10Yc/Ta/H would be a Morris 1100 motor. (pre 1969)
The 1000 is a Mini 1100 or a Leyland Mini (vin number starts with 021)
The 1001 is a Mini Clubman or Leyland Mini S (vin number starts with 022)

Edited to correct the Vin numbers.

Thanks guys for the help. I want to put a 1098 in (out by 60 thou) to keep up with the modern traffic. It will be used 95% of the time around town, and not up and down the F3. I will be happy for it to sit at 95 kph or so when needed.

Following your advice I will use the 1001 block as it is the most modern, and is from a Clubman. I will take the chance the Inspector and I can come to an agreement.

Thanks, Alf 8)
