Post subject:  Stripping down to the shell & rebuilding - how hard?
Hey there everyone,

After having an engine taken out a of mini for reconditioning how difficult is it to strip down all the parts off the mini in order for it to be cleaned up, sodablasted and repainted (2 pac) before putting everything back together again before the engine is placed back in?

I am sure taking apart a mini can be considered a tad easy but putting everything back together will be a logistically challenging task. How difficult is it to rewire them? Organisation is the key no doubt as well as a copy of the mechanics manual.

I am thinking that I will be going to sodablasting route and the one aspect I am considering is whether it is not necessary to get the inside of the cabin repainted as it tends not to be seen anyway due to carpet and trimming.

What I consider important for repainting would be the engine bay, out shell, doors, boot and inside of the boot with the bottom cleaned, rustproofed and repainted. I wll be using professionals for the painting.

Any advice and considerations greatly appreciated before I start talking to various auto repainters.

Pulling apart is the easy bit, putting it back together requires skill and patience.

1 good tip is to go over board with labeling and marking of parts that u pull off the car. Draw diagrams, make notes. Otherwise come time to put it all back together n u will have no clue!!!!

Get loads of those little cash bags from the bank and write on exactly what is in the bag.

Also, label where every single wire goes - use masking tape so you can write directly on where they all go back on.

It's easy to take a mini apart but more difficult to put it all back together again, several months down the track when you may have forgotten some stuff!!!

That's what everyone told me! I learnt the hard way! Plus I lost a few of the labelled bag's before I got lazy and started just chucking stuff randomly around for the fun of searching later! :lol: Moral - Do what everyone has said above.^^

If u do use masking tape and write on it with a description. Use a fine black nicko, if u use just a biro it eventually wears off.

Something that i had to put up with, i wasnt intending on my build taking 4yrs, n when it came time to find everything again, it was made all the more difficult with having to make out the faded biro written labels......Doh!

The majority of the issues I have had with my rebuild has been because I wasnt good enough about labelling parts and drawing diagrams of how things go back together.

I would suggest that you get the floor inside the car blasted aswell. you want to be sure that the floors are in good nick before rebiulding and after all how many minis dont have rust in the floor... Yeah mate like everyone said label and bag them.. at work I use sandwich bags (Glad). Minis are pretty simple so you shouldnt have to much dramas..

Make sure you label all your electrical terminals with masking tape and a permanent marker. then you can pull the wiring harness out.
When you put it back you will easily be able to work out where all the bits go.

Again use heaps of sandwich bags. Label them and put in boxes. mark them appropriatly (front subframe, rear subframe, door mechinisms etc) This way you shouldn't lose any bits. Keep every nut and bolt.

3rd most popular thing i did to boats, need a blow tourch, small tapping hammer and lead roll or stick, heat surface not so its cherry red but on a strip 20 cm long 10 secs heating is fine, rub lead on surface and then tap chunks of lead into fine thin sheats, go over it once more and you have a form of galvo that will protect that steel for 20 years or so,

surface cannot have any rust what so ever, so have it sand blasted,
you need a gas mask which is rated for this purpose, use a dust mask and you'll be dead in a week,
dont tap that lead too hard or it will just get so thin it wont do anything,

oh and you can also use brass and i think you can use copper but i have never used either,

also just too be doubly sure i would have a fan blowing into the mini,
