while i was driving my car yesterday the power cut out and something started burning behind the dash, so i turned off the ignition and let it cool off. 30 sec's later its good to go, no issues.
but just as i turn up to my house similar thing, engine cut out but there was a huge amount of smoke and a burning smell so i turned it off. now when i turn the key the ignition light goes half on and i smell something hot but engine doesnt tick at all.
anybody had something similar?

Sounds like you have a short in your wiring between the ignition switch and your dizzy.

The smell is the wiring shorting and burning the insulation. You need to replace the melted wiring. The problem with this you have to look at the wiring that travel next to the burnt wire, you may need to replace more than one wire.

There is a short circuit somewhere in the back of your speedo/wiring loom. I've had this before where exposed live wires were touching the body and therefor turning into ash ans smoke.

Have a look at it sooner rather than later as it could be a big wire in the middle of your loom that is melting and fusing all other wires with it all the way along the whole wire which could mean a BIG job.

that happened to me also, my ignition coil fell out of the housing and melted the electric tape and insualtion of all the wiring... check your wiring to see if its exposed anywhere ans making contact with any metal

Step one.
Put a fire extinguisher in your car.

already have a fire extinguisher, was the first thing i bought. i honestly believe my mini has one of the worst butcherd wiring looms ever, it was like that when i got it, and have attempted to fix it but its a mess. lucky im doing up an 850 shell at the moment which has a mint original wiring loom. guess i'll be mini less for a couple of weeks if i cant sort out this issue. *sigh*

If it's that bad, buy a new Loom and its much quicker and easier too
and you will have left over wire to add to so you can Hide the wireing
