Post subject:  Cutting Thread - Tap

I'm in the process of seat swapping and doing it legally
My engineer told me to use at least 8mm bolts for the seat mounts
the stock bolt I think is around 1/4" for the fronts

Now is it easy to tap a new thread like M8 using a hand tap tool like this

Yes, trick is to go slowly and 2 turns forward for one turn backwards to get metal out as you tap...

Two complete turns may sometimes be too much.....half to a full turn then back it off a quarter to crack the piece off you have cut is more like it. Take it easy and make sure you are keeping it vertical.

Depends on whether you have the correct diameter hole for the tap and the type of metal you are tapping.

Recommended drill size for 8mm tap is 6.8, but a 7.0mm works for most purposes.
Drill it straight, then tap it straight... or it'll look like crap.

it's gonna be an awkward position as I have to drill horizontally

The tap set you've got there looks like the cheapie 12.95 Super Cheap job. They're ok if you only tap a couple of holes (apart from the weird size mismatch in the set), but the problem with this set is that the more compact tap holder with the sliding bar (the black tool in the middle in your set) which makes it useable in tight places (which is pretty much everywhere in a mini ) is too small and will only fit the smallest tap sizes. So for 8mm you'll have to use the big, wide silver holder at the back of your set which will be a nightmare to use on the seat mounts.

I reckon you're better off buying a decent tap holder and the single correct tap size (ratcheting tap holders make the job even easier).

that pic was just a random find from ebay

I havent bought a set yet, I prefer to buy individual items as I wont be needing the other sizes anyway and would like to buy a good brand as well.
