He's very famous indeed. David Vizard refers to him a lot in Vizard's book "How to Modify a Mini". Longman (alive??) owns a mini racing parts firm. Richard Longman and co. or the like. He's most famous for making performacne mini heads as to what I've heard. Should be able to google him, as for racing? Most performance part builders and modifiers also raced.

Oh PS his firm is based in the UK.

Richard Longman is a Mini God! Began working at Downton Engineering under the late great Daniel Richmond, then went on to create Richard Longman & Company. Yes Circuit racer, got as far a touring cars in the more modern era, but well known for antics in 1275 GT one make race class, Metro Turbo one makes and others. Best known for his cylinder heads and split weber conversions. GT17 is a top spec Mini head Longman conversion.
Yes I believe still alive, health is suffering through a life of fast cars / motoracing incedents etc
Mini World did a thourough feature on him a year or so back,

Google him and you will find more! 8)

Richard Longman featured with a good segment in the DVD "The Story of the Mini" which was recorded around the 2003 London to Brighton Mini rally.

Its a good DVD

thats the car - the Longman car in Red white and blue.

I remeber seeing the BL works rally team campaigning a similarly designed rally car in the '70s. I think it was a car built for Evan Green and it was sold off to various lower level rally enthusiasts who drove it until it finally disappeared.

The car here had the same style but was red and white only I think.

Hi,
I have a Longman GT17 head on my car. I contacted Avonbar Racing, the current agents for Longman heads and they gave me the date it was done (1970), who for and the specifications (the valves are 37.7 and 31mm and run in offset guides). I was quite chuffed they still had records.

The Longman logo on the car is interesting, has anybody seen anything like that before? I might save the pic so I can have my friendly signwriter make up a sticker for my rocker cover.

Bye now
Al
