I've only ever seen it refered to in English mags and articles. Is it or its equivalent available here? If so where from and how much?

Nah u can get it here, repco should have it. I think its like a dollar. Its just used for checking tolerances, u put some say on the crank where the mains bearings would go, u bolt the main caps on and torque them to spec, then remove the caps then take the little bit of plastigauge that has been squashed and compare it to the sizes given on the packet to determine ur clearances. If the machine shop did its job right, all should be ok!

My local Repco just had a blank stare when I asked for Plastigauge. Coventry auto asked which sizes! I got two packs to cover the expected size ranges (clearances) of my motor. Cost was less then the petrol to get to Coventry auto!

Coventry auto do postr stuff to you (atleast here in Sydney they do).

Repco is but a shadow of its former self, ask for anything for a Mini now and they ask 2001 or 2002...
Once upon a time it was the place to go for parts.

Good only for oil, and Bling polishing supplies now.

Funny that ay, the local Repco here is basically staffed by people who just want a job, unlike on there ad on TV "Cars are our passion 2"......? Most of the people behind the counter either dont own a car, or its such a piece of junk u would barely pass it off as a car.

But they still have good buying power and can get just about anything from em.

Just don't ask them for anything too hard , rocked up recently and asked for mini tie rod end boots . "We have them but you've got to bring the old ones in to check , there's a big bin of boots out the back , boots don't have part numbers you know ....."

I think repco is know owned by bunnings as when i went to my local bunnings store for a globe for the mrs's maxima they didn't have anything auto . (like they used to). Upon leaving i looked in the perspex cabinet where they display their catalogue and pinned up next to the bunnings one was the repco one.

Might explain alot i think. Although they still remanufacture bits like brake boosters and such to a good standard.

There is another product that is exactly the same thing as Plastigage and I bought some recently from Blackwood/Paykels. I think it is just Blackwoods over the ditch, so give them a try.

If thats the case then it's Woolworths/safeway who also own BWS, Dan Murphy's,Tandy, Dick Smith, Hotels and Petrol stations - Is there no end to the monopoly?

How did you get served in Coventry's though? Last time I went there to get a few things I had to take a packed lunch.
