Post subject:	Changing SU shaft
Anyone replaced the main shaft in an SU? I am worried that if I undo the nut on the side, to extract the shaft, I will not remember the positioning of the throttle linkage. Does the throttle linkage go back in one spot only, or does the nut hold it in place, and you adjust it to suit?

Linkage fits only 1 way. Most important thing is setting the butterfly back in the same place- fit it the same way, do screws finger tight only, hold up to light and look thru it to make sure it's not got daylight anywhere. Then tighten screws. open and shut it, make sure not catching.

Tip... don't tighten it up too tight... **** brass There are two flats on the shaft.. which the wheel or linkage slides onto... you can get it either right; or really wrong

If doing twins, do one side at a time for an easy reference from the other. When rebuilding mine for the first time, I took about 24 photos in various states of dissassembly for reference when rebuilding. Got the film (remember film? ) developed, and never needed to look, cos I had the other one there. Now it is a matter of memory. You could consider using loctite on the butterfly screws. The bits that stick out are the worst things for flow! Then, you might not want to take the risk of losing one into the motor so whatever you do, make sure you are happy with it's attachment.

cool i am doing this tonight. i was thinking about loctite on those screws. should i use hard or soft gasket goo when reassembling?

I have always been told to use fresh gaskets and don't use a gasket goo. Never had a problem (with that anyway!) Otherwise I'd go soft, petrol resistant gasket goo if you need too, but just a very thin bead. Cheers matt

Reassembled one carb the other night. Looks brand new. The shaft was piss easy to swap. Just as well I did it too, as the old one was VERY worn! I am doing the other carb 2nite

Out of interest, do mind saying where you got the parts and how much? I have a couple HS6's sitting in need of new butterflies (run-on valves have been butchered out of them).
