The last owners of my car who obviously wanted a black roof and black vinyl seats just used normal matt black spray paint!
Works everywhere... where you don't sit as it rub off!

LOL i knew you'd post it here. Check out bunnings. I am sure I saw some white knight stuff that was for plastic/vynl. Another place to try is Clarke Rubber. Good luck let us know how you go |

Do not get the gloss stuff as it is really shiney and looks silly (if you're recoating seats). It seems hard wearing and easy to do. I used Vinylcote (or something spelled quite similarly). |

I've done it a few times once it came out crap but the next two times it was better and better. DONT buy the white knight crap from Bunnings - its not a propper dye and is a pain to pait properly, gets hardly any coverage and wears off. I've used it the first time but then switched to the VHT Vinyl dye from Repco (about the same price) and it was much much better. Gloss black can be used but you just have to be far more meticulous than with matt black as the gloss black makes any defect stand out (just like car painting). You'll need about 1 can for the two parts of the mini rear seat if you want to achive decent coverage and dept. The key is to make sure that the vinyl is as clean as possible and there's no dust. Then use many many light powdery coats rather than a few thick coats that'll run. Hang the items in a garage at a comfortable height and with light falling on them so that you wont have to touch the actual vinyl surface untill its fully dry. As the dye doesnt cover the channels in the stitching and the piping and the corners as well as the flat sections I first try to get the dye into all those channels with vertical sprays a bit closer and thicker than with the rest of the surface - you can be more agressive with the spaying here and use thicker coats to get penetration as the later general coats over the entire surface will blend the whole thing in. After several coats to get into the little chennels and the stitching grooves start applying the dye in even slow passes on the entire surface. Wait between each coat the time that is stated on the can (5-10mins?) Again light powdery coats are much better than thick ones. It'll seem like you havent covered anything on the first few passes but you'll start seeing results a few coats later and this way you'll get more coverage out of each can. |

Ive seen a standard headlining sprayed in regular matt black paint, and it looked 400 times better than using vinyl spray (cheaper too) |

cheaper.. just want the better product... knowing mates... they'll start testing how easy to rub off in no time, then i'm back doing it again. i'll look for a dye. cheers. |

Yeah I agree. You can't even notice that it's not 'vinyl' paint. And it sticks and doesn't require any extra effort. Just paint it like you were painting any other car aprt in matt black. |

I think this 'vinyl' paint might be a case of marketing. You see I rember at supercrap when I got some primer they guy asked me do you want 'acrylic primer' or 'sandable primer'? I said "Yeah i want acrylic but that's sandable anyways.... " I think maybe this vinyl paint is just normal paint, or only slightly different. Only marketed for vinyl use. Or I maight be wrong....
