Only looked at it quickly when I pulled it off but it would appear the f/wheel and backing plate surfaces are not parallel. Without it bolted together one of the "towers" is pocking up higher than the others. and the "high" one follows the same hole around as I turn the f/wheel around the backing plate - it's about 1mm. Some of the straps are badly distorted as well so I'll be getting new ones all round. Is it worth machining true?

Sounds like the clutch has been badly assembled...and possibly with a mix of bits....or your spring cover plate is broken......when you dissassemble a clutch you should mark or note where everything goes and put them back where they came from.

Having said that...reassembling properly and machining the posts (if necessary) will probably fix your problems.

Alternatively, fit a known Flywheel clutch combination.

take it all off and assemble it on the bench and see what's funny - I helped with one a little while ago and when it was all together and driving it shuddered, turned out one of the bolts wasn't through the straps so it was all out of alignment

measure the posts individually, but I really doubt they're not all identical heights
