the master cylinder return spring is broke :roll:

never seen nor heard of that before. the rubber bits are fine, and apart from a bit of rusty goop on the outside end of the piston, there is not much else wrong with it. must have been a bit short of stroke to activate the clutch.

so is it possible to get new springs? got to be heaps better than a whole new cylinder...

or does anyone have a spring they don't want? guess i'll have to put that in the wanted section and cross link etc... http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=25038&highlight=

it's wierd that'd be the cause, but I guess anything is possible with a mini. I forgot to put one on my van once and the clutch still worked normally - until the thrust bearing turned itself inside out

one of the sydney bods will have a little collection of old springs like I have, or if it's just broken at the end where it goes over the hooks at the end, how about opening up the first coil of the spring?

AFAIK you can run without the return spring...all it does is add to the heaviness of the pedal :?:

I was always led to believe the return spring was to hold the arm back so the clutch bearing wasn't on the diaphram .

nope

like Kev says - i mean the spring inside the bore of the master cylinder that ensures the piston moves all the way back to the bottom of the bore. here are the pics of what i pulled apart and cleaned up this afternoon. (gotta love the dremel :D )

the spring was actually snapped as it came out, and on the larger section there is another piece about to come off. it is a bit odd, because it does not look much like a fatigue failure, more like ductile. but i suspect that the surface of the spring may be hardened and if you crack through the surface, its all over :cry:

i'll have to ring around on Monday i suppose.

thanks - but i got two from Chong with the exhaust (the 40hp one? :lol: ) today. will have it all together and operating this afternoon - hopefully.

I had the same thing happen on my Corolla ('86), the spring was broken into about 5 pieces :shock: I had to get a second hand cylinder from the wreckers because I couldn't find a spring anywhere. It turned out that the broken spring was made from slightly thinner wire than the spring in the replacement cylinder. :?
