I have a 1.3i motor out of a mid 90's rover mini & it's idling a bit funny. It will start fine & when Im blasting along it's great but often when I slow down changing through the gears to come to a stop when I clutch in the revs drop & it stalls. IF I manage to clutch in & keep the revs up a bit it's ok. I think I've noticed the revs going up between changes in the lower gears as well as if the "choke" is sort ot jammed on but it doesn't have a choke in the car I can adjust. It idles a bit higher than I would have thought as normal if I can get it to sit idling but sometimes drops low until the accel is tapped.

Any ideas where to look 1st?

Cheers

Yeah i plan on getting a full service & tune etc. as it is due for one BUT I thought there may be something simple I could muddle with & see if it makes a difference.

Cheers

Get onto the mini mania site, there are instructions there for resetting the stepper motor.
I don't know if it controld choke or fly by wire throttle, but maybe that's it?
:D

How about the external relays etc , does it have a throttle up or idle up relay to increase revs for aircon or load etc ? Can you also check the wires to the air sensor or whatever it is in the exhaust , if it's broken or off the computer might be thinking the car needs to run rich or something . I remember something about a temp sensor doing the same and the computer thinking it was cold and needed the choke on (well , richer setting anyway) ....

I can almost 100% guarentee that the MAP sensor line from the throttle body to the ECU will be causing the problem. . .
There should be a thin plastic vacuum line running from the ECU (plugs in near the electrical connection) to the back of the inlet manifold via a flame trap (flame trap is a small plastic box a bit smaller than a matchbox mounted on the bulkhead). The unions are crappy Rover rubber elbows which get old and crack - the ECU doesn't get a vac signal from the motor, so it thinks your going flat out all the time and dumps heaps of fuel in. . .
Are you getting really awful fuel economy as well?

Well you were right.....milage isn't good. It was basicly empty so I put in $25, this almost filled the tank, only 16 litres! Small tank!! Anyway I've just done 37 km's and it's droped to 3 quarters full now.

Buggered if I'm gonna drive it around like that! I'll get it looked at....the stuf you mention.

Cheers guys :)
