Hi Guy and Gals,
Just in the process of starting a ground up resto of my other halfs mini. The reason for the post is to show you the before pics and to get as much information as possible. If people don't mind here during the build may I dig this thread back up to ask questions?(Being a Ford man mini's are not my speciality) The mini is booked in to get painted(exterior, engine bay, boot and interior) and while this is happening the engine and gear box will be getting the full treatment. While this is happening I have ordered a complete set of body rubbers and a brand new wiring loom. This brings me to my first question, when ordering the wiring loom I was asked if the mini had an altenator ? I would assume all cars had them but this has got me puzzled now and I want to make sure I am getting the right wiring. By the way the mini is a 1963 Morris 850. Second question does anybody have and pics of Morris 850 interiors ? Thanks for any help anybody can give.

Thanks for the reply, what's the difference between a generator and alternator and how do you tell? I live in Rockhampton where there is no water restrictions.

Yeah great find......... If you put down in your profile where in Queensland you are there would probably be someone close to / near by that could help out if need be and also i think that is a generator not an alternator so that you know

But hey don't listen to me The Doc will know for sure.......
nice find an 850 with sliding windows very nice, are you going to customise or original.

Also does it have the original 850 engine in it or is it a 998 or bigger

Good luck with the resto and such

Pat

both produce electricity [but of different flavours] from the motion of the fan belt pully.

Difference = NFI [at a guess a generator produces Iced coffee flavour and the alternator switches between chocolate and vanilla]

the Generator is old technology and I think was a positive earth system - good if you aim for originality, bad if you want to run modern electrical items that require a negative earth system provided by the alternator route

An alternator on an A series looks like this

Thanks Pat,
Yep it is the original engine, we bought it for $600 and have had it registered for about 2 years now. It is going to be restored to original specs except the paint job which is going to be old english white with a burgandy roof. We are going to keep the sliding windows because we have noticed everybody has the wind up type. The paint job you see in the pics is the original paint(except the bonnet where we were testing colours) and the engine has never been out of the bay.

PM Steve
He and his partner have the neatest 850 around. they can give you detailed information on your interior.

I also noticed you are up in Rockhampton. My parents are up there and i will be up to visit in March next year, so i will pop over and check the progress, if thats alright.

PM ronmini as well
He lives in Rockhamton too and is a very knowledgeable guy. I am hoping to ctah up with him while i am up there too!

Cheers

Aaron

Yep going for a original mini. Here is a closer pic of it, I might have to ring the people making the wiring loom to tell them to change it to a generator as I ordered one for a alternator.

A wise man. 850's are getting thin on the ground and will be worth a lot of money if unmolested. The generator does not produce any where near the same amount of power as an alternator. You will not notice any difference on a standard car unless you are going to add audio, stronger lights etc.

Should be about another month and a half before I get it back to put it all back together again. Been stripping it for the last couple of days and bagging every nut and bolt in sealable bags and writting on it what they are. By the time I finish with the mini it will be as good as my other car. See below.
