Well today is hopefully the day we get scotts mini back on the road. For those who dont know, scotts1275LS did its steering rack in September, and scott has had a case of CBF when it comes to fixing it. WEll, we hoped for a perfect day today, as the weather has been decent all week, but in true Victorian style, it is crap. Its actually threatening to rain. Now rain is good, but cant it come during the week???

Well anywayrodney was the first to show up.

HIm and scott started working on scotts car, trying to get the stands underneath it. This resulted in it doing a facinating balancing act.

THen Dylan showed up.

NOt counting rust, his car has 6 different colours on it!

Fianally JAckson showed up. I dont know if he's been to bed yet, but meh.

Rodney and Jackson start working on his car. It needs the head Gasket replaced or something.

We found something else tha needed fixing on JAcksons car too.

Anyway, i just heard hammering. I'll come back later with an update, and if applicable (and knowing this lot it will be) an injury list. We're just waiting for Bob to show up so thatwe can talk about the cricket.

s: thats it give me a hammer
R: no!

from the scene, (ext, day) scott trying to get the new steering rack in.

yes, me too. I really want to put more pics up, but the computer i am using HATES my camera, and wants something called software...never needed it before :D So no pics til i go to dads or mums to use the net. :( Some funny ones though, including Dylan making a mess while eating and scott licking the nipple on his rack.

*BREAKING NEWS*

The problem may not have been the steering rack at all, but the sttering collumn. Some spline thing is missing. Scott now says that it should have been the first thing he checked, but too bad foresight isn't as clear as hindsight. The steering rack swap may have been for nothing... (though he says "at least it has a new steeering rack in there)

Stay tuned.

well its worthy of mini chat now. Its not just me spamming. Scott is a dil for not checking the obvious first. He believes he is cursed with bad luck (hence him liking me) and immediatly suspected the worst.

This bit it important.
When the rack goes back in - its important that the u-bolts holding the rack in place are not tightened up until after the steering column is fitted. You may have to rotate laterally, the rack until the column just slides down into position and you can slip the lock bolt through into position.

Do not DO NOT try to hammer the steering column down onto the splines. It it doesn't slide down easily then the rack needs some more rotation to get it in the EXACT right position or the column spline clamp needs to be opened more with a screw driver.

Both the column splines and the rack splines are soft metal and hammering will destroy the splines and you run the risk of steering failure at the worst possible moment and in anycase it means start rack out again.

yeah, the same thing was happening as before, pulled the steering collumn out and the spline was well and truly stuffed, thogu hwas perfect on the new rack.

WE didnt tighten the rack up until the steering collumn was in position.

Time for another update. JAcksons car is almost finished. Dylan and scott both got haircuts. Scotts car will not be on the road tomorrow, it needs a new sttering collumn and a wheel alignment. THis sadly means we will be taking the van to mt Cooper tomorrow blasted damn van with no freaking stereo at all, too far to go hearing only engine god i miss music damnit. Going by his current track record the LS wont be back on the road til the end of summer.

Take this as a lesson people. DO NOT automatically assume the worst when something breaks. You could end up unneccessarily replacing something expensive that you dont need to. And i dont care that he got it at cost.
