Post subject:  Odd Request.. Source of Bearing Balls ?

Hey all, I'm putting together a '63 BSA Bike (at last !!)
and I'm missing a few bits and pieces.....

But the one that has me stumped tonight is the steering head...

It needs bearings.... i really need some 3/16 balls to make the assembly fit together... then i can fit the forks and get started on the front end.....

Ok, Brain teaser time.....

Are there any 3/16 Balls fitted to any part on a Mini ?

As you know, i have a garage FULL of bits i can canibalise from... I'm not afraid of breaking things to get what i need..... a lot ofthis stuff is going around christmas anyway.... (gotta get rid of it !)

Please help!!
Cheers

But when you'ev got a garage full of bits, the bearing shop becomes a last resort, especially when he's such a ning nong that he cant be bothered trying to help......

I'll try him on Saturday.....

Hey Kazjim,
What model is the Beeza? I've had a few of them over the years including B33, B34, A10 & A65. Will always regret selling the B34.

Old BSAs rock- I had 3 or 4 Bantam 125s, a C10, 2x C11s, an Army 500 S/V (B??), and a share in an A10 Gold Flash. 8)

Some of 'em would be worth $$$ now, maybe...

Yeah!
The old M20, forgot about them. As a matter of fact, I've still got one buried somewhere in my garage.

She's an old C-15 .... '63 model.....

Unit single and a box full of neutrals at the moment.....

I was actually looking for an M20 for a daily bike but the C15 came up at the right price, so i grabbed it.....

THe plan is to register it, get my licence, ride the 250 for a few months and then sell it to finance my "real bike" ... a pre-unit BSA - preferebly an A65 or similar....

I'd be very, very happy with a 40's military bike though !!

Cheers

A65's are unit construction, A10's are pre-unit. The A65 is a sweet bike, there's no doubt about that. I wouldn't mind buying another one, one day. Maybe when all the billy lids are left home and my money's my own again
But then again, if I had the money I'd buy another B34 Gold Star - they're like the BSA equivalent to a Cooper s.

If you do get hold of an A65 kazjim, there's a couple of mods that are worthwhile considering (unless you want to keep it original of course). One is to bore and stroke it using the A10 crank. The pre-unit crank is a longer stroke and you can stretch the A65 to almost 750cc. (Not quite, I can't remeber off hand exactly what - about 730 or something like that). The other is a needle roller bearing conversion on the timing side main bearing. Both A10 & A65 used a plain bronze bush. The main problem with doing the conversion is that the bush supplies the oil feed to the crank. This is overcome with an external oil line into the timing cover with an oil quill into the end of the crank. I have never done this, but have seen it on a couple of bikes. It's an excellent mod for bottom end longevity. 8)

M20's & M21's can be bored to somewhere near 700cc (again can't remember the actual capacity off hand) using a Subaru piston and the M21 flywheels. If I ever get around to putting my M20 together, I'm going to look into this a bit more. I've got a set of M21 flywheels to do it. :)

My M20 bike (and a C10 & C11) is buried in 30ft of fill on what was my father's property at Dural. It isn't ours now, so I can't go digging... Anyhow it's been 35 years...

M20 was 500cc, M21 was 600cc. Both were side valve singles. An industrial version of the M21 motor, with the cylinder horizontal, was used on `Hargans' portable circular saws (think pre- chainsaw) back in the 50s.
They were torquey old motors.

Another motor I had and lost (long story) was an Indian Scout V twin.
But I still have the gearbox- it's powered by a Hoover washer motor & drives my power hacksaw..

I had two Indian Scout basket cases. Never did get them going - ended up swapping them both for the A65 BSA.
