I was lucky to inherit a webber for Mo, and I contacted the ol' insurance company to find out if its OK to put it on and they said it might be providing it is the right size...

What different sizes are there?

What is the basic difference between a webber and a twin SU.

its getting annoying talking to them because they have told me the twin SU is a total no no, but a ram flow air filter is OK, but is not ok on my Charade and that it doesnt matter what diameter wheel I put on the car as long as its no wider than 5" but then it doesnt matter if I put on 6" tyres

Any help is appreciated.

In sidedraft Webers (which I think you mean) there were 38, 40, 42, 45mm sizes common, also 48 (not common).

(In downdraft Webers there were many variation types but these are usually off another car anyhow. A 28/36DCD was pretty common fitment to Minis and others years back.)

I dunno why insurance co's get paranoid about `twin carbs' it's not as if they add LOTS of power, on their own anyway.

A sidedraft Weber or Dellorto is basically twin carbs in a single body. It differs from an SU in basic principles but they both manage to mix fuel with air in the right? proportion to make power.

If the insurance company said it fine to go with the Webber, do it. I think you're running a 998 Stocky..go the 40

There is so much you can learn from reading, but I find I learn so much better being told face to face.

Back to the webber question... what changes need to be made to the Manifold..? These damn insurers wanna know EVERYTHING...

Like the man said, the weber is a twin throttle body design, so therefore there needs to be 2 inlet holes in yer manifold. Your single SU manifold only has one inlet hole. See the mismatch?

PLUS your standard single SU manifold is part of the same casting as the exhaust manifold. So you need a new inlet manifold. No question about modifying the standard one to fit a weber carb. But if you remove the standard inlet manifold, you gotta throw away the exhaust mainfold too. You could grind off the inlet part of the casting and keep the exhaust part of the casting. But why bother. You will put extractors (headers) on instead, otherwise you are wasting your time putting the weber on in the first place. AAAARGHH now you have to tell the clowns about the exhaust mods as well......

If it's AAMI, forget it. They cancelled my son's stocko 998 Clubbie just because of a friggen 2 pipe `sports' muffler at the end of the stock peashooter system. What you get for `doing the right thing'.

Most understanding re Mini mods are Shannons, and Vigil, IMO.

Yeah Shannons said they don't care what I modify on my car as long as its legal - and IMO they're reasonably priced too.

A lot of insurance companies have stupid policies in regard to mods... I find it amusing when they ask questions about modifications to your car and they clearly have no idea what they or you are talking about... eg. my *EFI* XF Fairmont Ghia a few years ago - "does it have a holley carby?" umm...no
They were ok with the 2.5" exhaust, lowered suspension, auto-to-5spd conversion and whatever else, but wouldn't insure it with a holley

Good thing is that they said it was OK for all the mods so I asked them to put that in writing and they are in the process of doing that now. LARFIN..!!!

Personally I think they should make third party property damage insurance compulsory, after a dole bludging no hoper ran his bomb up the ass of my just restored HK Wagon doing 120 in a 60 zone. He lost his licence but I lost my car and my insurance company is still trying to get back the repair costs from him, If I didn't have comprehensive I would have been totally screwed
At least get your vehicle insured for third party fire and theft, it costs sweet FA on a mini, I'm paying $300 a year which is the price of a hamburger a week, well worth it for the peace of mind.
