hey guys!!! i'm so excited, i went in a mini for the first time!!!!! I LUV IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! anyway it was a 1969 minimatic, but i found a few problems with it and i'm just wondering if its normal for all minis. The problem is the brake is REALLY hard, I had to hit it hard before it stops and it rolls for a few seconds... hmmm... the owner said all minis are like that..... geeesss.. i can't sleep tonite!!!!

LOL...uve gotten the "mini syndrome" i couldnt sleep the night i test drove my mini as well....in fact i didnt sleep well at all untill i finally brought it home n kept it in my garage...=)

Before I had a Mini on the road, I used to go test drive them just to get the feeling back. Then hop back in the ol KE55 Corolla and drive home, BORING! Typically Mini is brakes you have to pump. You will get used to it.

Hmm, shouldn't need to pump the brakes, that indicates air in the lines. Most minis have no brake servo, so the pedal pressure to get decent braking is quite high. I let an old girlfriend test drive my Clubman, and she tried to drive it like a new Jap car. Pushed the brake pedal a little and expected it to stop, also tried to change gear like a jap car - couldn't find 3rd. The're a generation or two behind japanese cars but that's exactly why they're so cool - every time I reverse and turn around to look out the rear window, I'm surprised to see the window within touching distance... |

If the rest of the car is fine....No Major rust or Bog Sections...  Take a Magnet in a Hanky and use it to find Bogged up sections...Pull some of the carpet up and look at the floor...Mech is easyer to fix
First Car I drove Mum's Mini. First Car Orange Clubby I drove around for a while in Rx4 then a Nice EH Holden Premi Wagon with Nice Polished Alloys and lowered 2"....Then a ALFA33 and also a Little Red Moke with my Wife... Now a ALFA 75 (Lowered 2").....Wife said we do Need another Car...I ASKed her what she wanted.....A Mini.  ..Now I have 2 
Just a lot of fun to drive..  ..and every body loves you're Mini

HA HA my girlfriend reacted exactly the same way when I was trying to talk her into buying her first mini, didn't take much pursuading after that point!! |

First time I ever drove a Mini, I had the same experience with the brakes. I braked as you would in a late model car......  ...it's not stopping....

There's definately no other car like a Mini. I've driven alot of different cars over the years, most were more comfortable and came with things like air con, power everything etc. On the flipside if you break down in a new car unless it's anything other than a flat tire or battery or running out of fuel you might as well just call the tow truck, just ask the dozens of owners I saw broken down on the trip home from Adelaide. That's not even mentioning the devaluation on new cars, my 2002 Sonata cost $28,000 new and I just sold it for $12,000. At least with a Mini as long as you look after it it will only go up in value, something unheard of in most cars. With a Mini you have engine and road noise, natures own air con (windows), you feel every bump on the road, but you actually feel like you're really driving. Even the oldest men turn into little boys again when around or even better driving them. Best of all is the fact that you can fix them yourself with a little knowlege if and when they break down, you also don't have to worry about warranty and crap if you want to modify it, don't like the drums, rip em off and put discs on., then you'll stop in a hurry. This should be in the bumper sticker thread, how's this one "A Mini gets older but the driver doesn't"

The brakes are always hard on minis without a servo brake system. If it's a matic then almost 100% sure it doesn't have a servo as in it's place is an under bonnet heating system. If you compare the brakes to any other modern car, it will feel like there are no brakes until you stomp on them hard. But so long as they work and they are hard. The difference is if you stomp on the brakes and it is soft and the pedal movement varies. This indicates that you have air in the system and can be fixed by one of two ways: 1) bleeding the system 2) if that doesn't work then you need new wheel cylinders as most likely they are leaking. The pedal for the brake should be stiff and consistently stiff. I remember the first time I drove my mini, smiles all round!

hey all 68matic: the car's in blakehurst! the owners a realli nice old man.. even invited us to have a coffee wif him
anyway the car has other probs like: -door doesn't close properly -water stains on the roof -paints a bit shonky - the owner feeds it premium unleaded without changing its head?!?!?! apart from that the engine sounds ok!!! umm.. might have to test out a few more to distinguish the goodies and lemons!!

If it's rust bubbles then you've got a problem. If it's just shonky then it's age - That is a bit of a concern! if he doesn't use Flashlube or some form of lead replacement additive then it's a problem. If he uses Flashlube then no problems, that's what most of us use, Flashlube and Optimax/Synergy9000/Ultimate/Vortex. If he isn't using lead replacement additive then mate... I'd look for another car
The Hydro seems overly pumped up... you may need to let it down abit (if it really is a hydro car...) Other than that she looks great! |
