Post subject:  Morris minor question.

Just to satisfy my curiosity regarding the "pov pack" as sometimes reffered minis:

Did all mini minors made in 1966 come with 850 type sliding windows, and big pocket doors?
Did they have the larger early/ english type bootlid?
Did they all come fitted with 850cc engines with remote change transmission?

Can anyone else offer any light to the difference between 850s, Deluxes, and mini minors? Trim colours? Exterior colours?

Thanks.

:D :D

Sliding windows finished in 1965. Even on the 850 (now called Morris Mini Minor) from then they used Mini Deluxe/Cooper S windup window doors.
850 here never had remote transmission, they were the so-called `magic wand'. Main casing was the same as remote, but with different diff housing.
English bootlid finished in 1964/65- so no, the 850 in 66 had the Oz bootlid.

gee there is heaps of books with great descriptions and photos of the evolution of minis.
Just in brief though, the 850 mini was the first mini - it was a pretty primitive but functional car compared to later variant. about 1961- 64. Next came the mini deluxe with hydrolastic suspension, windup windows and a 998 motor with a non pudding stick gearbox (it was more like a Cooper type gear box. Then came the Mini K which was a further updated mini with a 1100 motor etc. Next came the Clubman range and all the derivitives.

I have purposely totally left all the sporting minis out of this discussion.

The poverty pack does not refer to the early 850 cars. It actually refers to cars being bought by various government departments like the electricity, police station cars (not - definately not- highway patrol cars) and because the various government departments were tightwads thaey screwed BMC down on price.

The pov packs were minis that had the absolute lowest level of comfort. Poor vinyl seats, sliding windows, pudding stick gearbox, floor starters, no heaters and were fitted with whats ever standard motor was on the go at the time. Be it 850, 998 or 1100. One of my wives had an Sydney electricity county council version that was everything described above with a 1100 motor. It would lay rubber for fifty metres (maybe a slight embellishment) (cross ply tyres) and drag off a GTR torana for 10 or 15 metres. But then you had to change to second and the ratios were woefully matched.

Those were the days.

Hi guys,
Sorta related, did Australia produce both Ausitin and Morris variants? I was told once that all Australian produced Cooper S's were Morris but there is an Aussie Austin Cooper S here locally. Has it been "badged" at some point?

Regards
Al

Austin Minis including S were never produced here. Morris only.
Same goes for the 1100 cars.

Mk2 Cooper S exported to New Zealand were unbadged and badged over there according to wether they were going to an Austin or Morris dealer

AFAIK, Morris Mini Minors did not have sliding window, they had winders, this was as Doc has referred, after the release of the deluxe, I do agree with Mike about the sales of these vehicles though, Electric, Police station cars, water authorities, the trim was a cheap vinyl that didn't last too well! (rare now!) Vans of the period had similar trim, I gues the Minors were though of a a 'commercial' sedan.

So: Winding windows, Aussie boot lid, magic wand boxes, cheap vinyl trim, 850 and some 998 motors (don't know of any 1100's ?) Single pod speedo, floor start?

Any of the Minor owners want to add?

I thought this was a question about 'Morris Minors' should change the topic to Morris Mini Minors!!

Yep - an 1100 motor - was one of the last roundnose mini types well into the adjacent mini K production period. Was a yellowish colour (Sydney county council electricity) and it still (strangely enough) the cast metal 850 grill.

For all that it was a nice enough car - must have been a meter reader who was fairly senior because it was fairly low milage.

Hi Al
I haven't heard of Aussie Mk1's being badged as Austins . The Mk1 has the car type prefix of YKG2S2 , on the ID Plate , with the "K" indicating Morris Cooper . The Mk2 has YG2S4 on its Compliance plate and radiator shroud panel , or on the radiator shroud panel as in the case of 1969 Mk2's . The "K" was omitted due to the fact that no Austin Coopers where planned to be produced in Aus after May 1969 , when Mk2 production began . A Mk2 could therefore be badged as either an Austin or a Morris , as the Compliance Plate doesn't distinguish between the 2 , whereas the Mk1 is clearly denoted as a Morris on its ID Plate .......
Have you seen what is on the ID Plate for this particular car ???
