Saw this in Port Macquarie today on the way back from Sydney , it sounded like a moke , looked like a moke from a distance except for the extra height , but isn't quite a moke .... Anyone want to guess what it is ? I was talking to the owner about it so I know .......

is it one of those things that bmc tried to use to replace to moke, or something along those lines?

Is it one of the Moke variants that BMC tried (unsucessfully) to sell to the military?

by the look of it it is moke related to some degree it looks like either a modified moke with some sort of 4wd leaf spring suspension looks like a custom made subframe

the only notible thing other than the height and leaf suspension that makes me think it's not a moke is that the mud guards go straight down where as on every moke i have seen they go backwards diagonally slightly
i'm going to take a guess if i'm wrong about the 4wd mod it could be somthing that
Charles Anderson may have designed called the CUB
if it's a 4wd mod i'd love to know how the hell they got it passed a blue slip as that alone would have been a task and a half...

OR it's an import moke that has been modded

looks to be some sort of modded small wheel moke. looking at how much space it takes up in the car park, i would say that it is about the same size a moke. just higher. dont know about the side covers though. its a tough one. maybe a small wheel with suspension and engine mods including mods to the sides for some reason.

Some good guesses , and some bad ones .....

It's owned by it's builder , an ex mini racer and enthusiast from the 60's who grew up and bought a 6 cylinder valiant when he got married etc . He is a vehicle body builder by trade and decided to build himself a moke from scratch but in the process decided to improve on it . It uses morris 1100 subframes but the hydrolastic units are replaced with coil springs (no leaf springs , not sure what you were looking at , front arm perhaps ?) , it's got a couple of inches extra clearance compared to a moke , the bonnet opens like normal but then everything else will hinge forward for ease of work . The body is made of 1/8" plate (around 3mm thick for the non metric people) and is fully welded so very , very strong and will take forever to rust .The side pods were narrower and a lot more interior space . The owner builder made it about 15 years or so ago and it's been fully engineered (he had a couple of engineers working where he worked and they watched over the whole project) and has been registerred in 3 states (Nsw , SA and Vic) as he's moved around for work . Motor is straight out of a Morris 1100 .

I was gonna say home made, it definitely wasn't one of the scamp etc. variants, and wasn't 4wd.... but 3mm plate! must weigh more than a commodore!

It says on the right rear guard "maximum speed 110kph" , with the weight of the body I think it was an exageration ... It had a rear half cage , but the windscreen frame was 1/4" (6mm) plate bent into shape . it would have bee stronger than the rear cage .... It was a very neat job all up though , complete witha digital speedo ....
